TERRY FIGG FROM STEVENAGE CONVICTED OF CHILD SEX ABUSE IN ORPINGTON
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community, Terry Figg, a former scout leader from Stevenage, has been found guilty of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against young boys during his time in Orpington. The crimes, which spanned over a decade from April 1970 to December 1980, involved a total of 11 separate acts of indecent assault on four boys under the age of 14. These offenses took place while Figg was serving as a scout leader, a position that entrusted him with the safety and well-being of vulnerable children.Figg, who is now 68 years old and resides on Cook Road, Stevenage, was convicted by a jury at Croydon Crown Court on November 16 after a rigorous 12-day trial. The court found him guilty of all 11 charges related to the abuse, but he was acquitted of four additional allegations of indecent assault. The verdict has brought a sense of justice to the victims and their families, who endured years of suffering before the case was brought to light.
The criminal proceedings against Figg began with his arrest on March 19, 2015. Following his arrest, he was formally charged on January 21, 2016, and subsequently released on bail to appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on February 17 of the same year. Throughout the legal process, it was revealed that Figg had previously been a vocal advocate for protecting bus services in the Stevenage area, a role that contrasted sharply with his actions as a trusted community figure.
The offenses took place in Orpington, a suburb on the outskirts of London, during the 1970s and early 1980s. These crimes, committed under the guise of his role as a scout leader, exploited the trust placed in him by the community and the families of the children involved. The victims, who were under 14, suffered deeply from the abuse, which should never have occurred given the protective role Figg was supposed to uphold.
As the case concludes, Terry Figg is scheduled to be sentenced at Croydon Crown Court on December 9. The court's decision will determine the length of his imprisonment, but the verdict already signifies a significant step toward justice for the victims and a reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children from those who abuse positions of authority.
