CASTLEFORD PAEDOPHILE STEVEN SMITH SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS FOR ABUSE AND SHOVEL THREAT

In April 2022, a disturbing case emerged from Castleford involving Steven Smith, a man convicted of heinous crimes against a young girl over a period of more than a decade. The court heard how Smith, now 58, systematically abused the girl during her childhood, causing lifelong trauma and suffering.

Leeds Crown Court was informed that Smith's abuse was both prolonged and calculated. When the victim, who had endured years of suffering, finally attempted to confront him and report the abuse as she grew older, Smith's response was shockingly violent and threatening. He visited her home armed with a shovel, which he used to threaten her in an effort to silence her and prevent her from speaking out about her ordeal.

Despite denying multiple charges that dated back over 30 years, Smith was found guilty of seven counts of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child. The court was presented with a victim impact statement, read aloud by prosecutor Julian Jones, which detailed the profound and lasting effects of Smith’s actions. The victim, who has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, revealed that she has experienced suicidal thoughts, continues to sleep with the light on, and struggles to lead a normal life. She also disclosed that she still wets the bed as an adult, a symptom linked to the trauma inflicted by Smith during her childhood. During her childhood, she would intentionally wet herself to try to deter Smith from abusing her, highlighting the severity of her fear and the extent of her suffering.

Throughout the trial, Smith was held in custody at HMP Leeds, appearing via video link. He was observed to shake his head repeatedly as the judge addressed him. Recorder Geraldine Kelly delivered a stern and uncompromising sentence, stating, “You systematically and repeatedly sexually abused her over a 10-year period. She was entitled to be happy, care-free, and innocent as a child, and you robbed her of her innocence.”

She further emphasized the lasting impact of Smith’s actions, noting that the victim still wets the bed as an adult and lives in fear of him. The judge acknowledged the courage it took for her to finally come forward and report the abuse, especially considering the victim was falsely accused of lying during cross-examination. “The scars from your actions were apparent,” Kelly said. “You were a bully. When she finally spoke out, your reaction was to bully her into silence and threaten her with a shovel.”

In her sentencing remarks, the judge sentenced Steven Smith to 17 years in prison, including an additional two years on extended license. Furthermore, Smith is required to register as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions. The case from Castleford serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child abuse and the importance of justice for victims who summon the courage to speak out.
