SAMUEL SMITH PREDATOR FROM CASTLEFORD LEEDS USED DOG TO LURE CHILDREN AND COMMITTED SEXUAL OFFENSES
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the communities of Castleford and Leeds, Samuel Smith, aged 29, was found guilty of heinous crimes involving the exploitation and sexual assault of young children. The court proceedings revealed a pattern of predatory behavior where Smith employed manipulative tactics, including the use of a dog and an Etch A Sketch toy, to gain the trust of vulnerable girls in the area.During the summer months, residents of Castleford were gripped with fear as Smith targeted children in public spaces such as streets and local parks. The court heard that Smith’s approach was calculated and deliberate, often involving the use of animals to lure children into a false sense of security. On one particularly disturbing occasion, Smith approached two young girls in a park in Castleford, allowing them to play with an Etch A Sketch toy while he used a dog as part of his scheme.
The court was also informed that Smith’s criminal activities extended beyond initial contact. He took indecent photographs of one of his young victims, further demonstrating the severity of his offending. The victims ranged in age from as young as four to seven years old, highlighting the grave danger Smith posed to the most vulnerable members of society.
Despite being arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl in Leeds, Smith was released on bail, only to be rearrested on June 6 of the same year. Authorities uncovered a disturbing cache of over 16,000 images depicting children on computers found at his residence on Greek Street. These findings underscored the extent of his offending and the threat he represented.
Smith ultimately pleaded guilty to a total of 19 charges, including seven counts of sexual assault on a child under 13 and 12 counts of possessing or creating indecent images of children. The court heard that his actions were not impulsive but carefully planned, with some offenses carried out while he was equipped with tools such as a dog to facilitate his predatory behavior.
In sentencing, Judge Geoffrey Marson, QC, condemned Smith’s actions, emphasizing the psychological harm inflicted on both the children and their families. He sentenced Smith to seven years in prison, with an additional three-year extended license period upon release, reflecting the serious concern about his potential to reoffend.
Insp Dave Bugg, representing the Neighbourhood Policing Team in Castleford, expressed relief that Smith had been apprehended and emphasized the distress caused within the community. He thanked local residents for their patience and cooperation during the investigation, which was described as a challenging and tense period for all involved.
