STEVE RELF'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN BIRMINGHAM AND MANCHESTER: SEXUAL PREDATOR SENTENCED TO LIFE
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the communities of Birmingham and Manchester, Steven Relf, a 39-year-old man with a disturbing history of sexual offenses, has been sentenced to an indefinite prison term following his conviction for multiple heinous crimes.Relf, who now resides in Birmingham after previously living in Manchester, was found guilty of targeting vulnerable women in both cities, exploiting his position and trust to commit acts of sexual violence.
Relf’s criminal activities came to light after a series of investigations that revealed his predatory behavior dating back to at least 2010.
Police authorities have described him as a dangerous sexual predator, emphasizing that he could have potentially victimized as many as 40 women over the years.
The authorities are actively encouraging any women who may have encountered Relf or been affected by his actions to come forward and share their experiences, in hopes of uncovering further victims and understanding the full extent of his crimes.
Originally from the United States, Relf was residing at Alness Road in the Whalley Range area of Manchester at the time of his arrest.
He was later moved to Birmingham, where he is currently living.
His criminal case was prosecuted at Manchester Crown Court, where Judge Anthony Gee QC handed down a severe sentence, indicating that Relf would serve a minimum of four years and 140 days before being eligible for parole.
The judge’s remarks underscored the gravity of Relf’s offenses, stating, “You realised they were inebriated and you pursued them and targeted them.” Relf’s arrest followed a series of disturbing incidents involving two women, which ultimately led to his conviction.
The first victim, a middle-aged mother, was in the Lounge Bar located in Chorlton-cum-Hardy last July when Relf served her a drink.
She later found herself searching for her friend within the bar when she was unexpectedly grabbed by the arm by a man she later identified as Relf.
Her recollections become hazy after that, but she remembers feeling distressed in a taxi after being raped by Relf.
The second victim was a woman who noticed Relf staring at her while she was in a different bar in September.
She moved on to another venue but later saw Relf on the street that same night.
During a phone argument with her boyfriend, Relf approached her and suggested they share a taxi home.
Gaining her trust, he even spoke to her boyfriend on the phone, assuring him that he would look after her.
However, Relf’s intentions were far from benign; he took her to his home where he raped her.
Following these incidents, Relf was arrested, and DNA evidence linked traces found on his first victim to him.
He was charged with both sexual assaults.
During the court proceedings, Relf pleaded guilty to two counts of rape.
The court also heard evidence from a third woman, who claimed Relf had raped her in 2005.
Although he was never formally charged for that earlier offense, her detailed statement was used to establish his pattern of predatory behavior and bad character.
Judge Gee emphasized that, although there was no scientific evidence proving the women were drugged, the circumstances indicated they were in a state, likely due to alcohol consumption, that rendered them incapable of giving consent.
As part of his sentence, Relf was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and will be subject to parole conditions if he is granted early release.
His case highlights the ongoing dangers posed by sexual predators and the importance of vigilance and justice in protecting vulnerable individuals from such heinous acts.
