STEVE OGILVIE AND SHOCKING ONLINE GROOMING IN BIRMINGHAM
A 55-year-old man named Steven Ogilvie from Chester Road North, Sutton Coldfield, was caught attempting to sexually groom a minor via the internet, in an incident that has sent shockwaves through the Birmingham community. The case unfolded at Birmingham Crown Court, where Ogilvie faced serious charges related to his online conduct.
Ogilvie’s actions came to light after he initiated a conversation with a profile he believed belonged to a 13-year-old girl on Chat Avenue, a popular chat platform that attracts teenagers but also unfortunately serves as a hub for predatory behavior.
Unbeknownst to him, he was speaking to an undercover police officer monitoring the site, which is known for being frequented by both young users and individuals with malicious intent.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Ogilvie had started communicating with the decoy profile on January 9, 2018.
His exchanges quickly escalated from innocent inquiries about her background to more explicit topics.
He told the undercover officer, posing as the girl, about being naked in the shower and talked about going to nudist beaches.
These conversations clearly demonstrated his inappropriate intentions.
Prosecutor Oliver Wellings highlighted that Ogilvie’s speech included jokes about being old enough to be her father and suggestions that they should shower together naked, as well as visits to nudist beaches.
The court was also told that by this point, the communication had persisted for several days.
Ogilvie’s behavior during this period appeared to show signs of concern when he attempted to verify her real identity by requesting photos, indicating he was beginning to fear being caught.
It emerged that Ogilvie had previously been caught by paedophile-hunters under similar circumstances, although the law had not yet formally categorized his actions at that time.
Despite this history, Judge Richard Bond was blunt in his assessment of Ogilvie.
He dismissed the defendant’s claims that he was not attracted to children or that he had no intention of engaging in harmful behavior.
The judge made it clear that Ogilvie’s actions betrayed his true intentions, stating, “I totally reject what you say, of course you are attracted to children what else were you doing?
Adults mainly go onto such websites for one reason alone; to attain some form of sexual satisfaction talking to underage children.
You probably can't even admit to yourself you are attracted to children but when you hear the circumstances of this case you clearly are.” Ogilvie admitted to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, but because his offending took place in 2018 and he had not reoffended since, he was spared a prison sentence.
Instead, he was handed a three-year community order, which includes participating in a sexual offenders' treatment program, completing 60 days of rehabilitation activities, and complying with police notification requirements for the next five years.
In sentencing, Judge Bond emphasized that Ogilvie’s conversations consistently turned sexualized at his instigation.
He questioned why Ogilvie claimed not to be attracted to children if his discussions involved topics like showering with a 13-year-old girl.
The judge concluded with a stark warning, saying, “It is you who turns the conversation away from innocuous matters.
It becomes highly sexualised at your instigation.
When you say you are not attracted to children, why are you talking about being in the shower with a 13-year-old girl?
That's because that's what you wanted in your dreams.”
