NORTHAMPTON MAN JAILED FOR MURDER, MUST SERVE THREE YEARS
A man aged 43 who was found guilty of the murder of his partner has received an indefinite prison sentence, with a minimum term of three years before he can be considered for parole.
Steven Jewell was convicted last week for the killing of Nicola deSousa, a 31-year-old hairdresser, in February of the previous year.
The incident took place at the couple’s shared residence on Oakley Street, The Mounts.
His defense attorney argued that Jewell’s behavior was influenced by long-term heavy drinking.
However, the prosecution rejected his manslaughter plea, claiming Jewell was fully aware and in control when he strangled Ms.
deSousa.
Judge Charles Wide QC stated that Jewell must serve at least three years before any parole eligibility, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime.
Ms.
deSousa’s family issued a heartfelt statement, describing her as a compassionate, intelligent, and lively young woman.
They highlighted her strong family values, her aspirations, creative talents, and her pursuits as an emerging photographer and artist who was continuously striving for self-improvement.
