SCOTLAND-BASED OFFENDER STEVEN JAMES INVOLVED IN ONLINE CHILD EXPLOITATION CASE IN COVENTRY
In July 2014, it was revealed that Steven James, a 36-year-old from Darlington, posed as a young girl known as 'Florida Beach Girl' on Skype to deceive a teenage boy in Coventry.James's online manipulation led the 14-year-old boy to remove his clothes during a video chat.
The boy's father discovered the exchanges and promptly contacted Coventry Police, earning praise for monitoring his child's online presence.
Coventry Police enlisted IT specialists and consulted with London's Child Exploitation and Online Protection team, who identified James as the individual behind the 'Florida Beach Girl' alias.
Police executed a raid on his home in May of the previous year, but found his computer's data heavily encrypted.
Despite his claims of forgetting the passwords for his encrypted files, expert investigators recovered enough evidence to connect James to extensive illegal activity, including 450 indecent images of children and proof that he had groomed other minors.
On July 17, at Teeside Crown Court, James, of Victoria Embankment, Darlington, received a four-year prison sentence after admitting to making indecent images of children and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
He was disqualified from working with children, placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, and subjected to restrictions on his future computer use.
Detective Constable Jon Barker of Coventry Police commented, “James used specialist software to conceal his internet activities and encrypt parts of his computer.
He provided Durham detectives with two 27-character passwords, both of which were incorrect.
James claimed he couldn’t recall how to access some files, but forensic IT experts recovered sufficient evidence showing he downloaded indecent images and incited children to engage in sex acts online.” DC Barker also commended the vigilance of the Coventry boy’s father, emphasizing, “You need to be absolutely certain who you’re talking to online — your son or daughter might think they’re chatting with another teen, but it could be someone much older with malicious intent.
Parents shouldn’t feel awkward asking their children about their online interactions and whom they’re communicating with on social media.
Establishing rules, such as only using the internet in shared spaces like the living room rather than in bedrooms, can help keep children safe.”
