STEVEN BIELBY SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR HORRIFIC ABUSE IN CORNWALL
In a grave case of historic abuse, Steven Bielby, a 68-year-old man from Woodfield Road in Bude, Cornwall, has been handed a lengthy prison sentence after being found guilty of multiple charges related to the sexual abuse of a young girl.The crimes, which spanned over three decades, included rape and indecency with a minor, and took place across various locations within Cornwall.
Bielby appeared before Truro Crown Court to face the consequences of his actions after initially pleading guilty to four counts of rape and indecency with a child.
However, his journey to justice was complicated by his decision to flee Cornwall before his trial could commence, a move that led to a period of evasion.
He was eventually captured after being detected by an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) camera near Swindon.
Once apprehended, he was returned to Cornwall to face sentencing.
The prosecution, led by Jason Beal, detailed the disturbing timeline of the offences, which had been committed over 30 years ago.
According to the evidence, Bielby groomed his young victim—who was only 13 at the time—by buying her presents, gradually establishing a pattern of controlling and abusive behavior.
The court heard that Bielby, who was employed as a fruit and vegetable delivery driver, would take the girl on various journeys under the guise of work-related errands.
During these trips, he would commit acts of sexual violence, raping her in the back of his van before dropping her off.
The witness testimony revealed that the abuse was persistent, happening on multiple occasions, with Bielby also meeting the victim at her school and at other locations to continue his assault.
The prosecutor stated, “She didn't fight it because it was so routine,” highlighting the manipulative and systematic nature of his grooming.
The court heard that Bielby encouraged the young girl to shave her pubic hair and even instructed her to steal condoms from local shops, demonstrating a calculated effort to facilitate ongoing abuse.
The true extent of the trauma endured by the victim emerged through a victim impact statement, in which she disclosed that the abuse severely disrupted her life.
She was deprived of a proper education, had few friends, and suffered from mental health issues, including a breakdown.
She was prescribed anti-psychotic medication in the aftermath of her experience.
Representing Bielby, barrister Rupert Taylor acknowledged his client's health problems and his unwell state, emphasizing that Bielby did not attempt to downplay his culpability.
Despite this, the judge, Simon Carr, emphasized the gravity of his crimes.
Addressing the court, he described the abuse as “systematic and long-term,” noting that Bielby had groomed and prepared his victim for sexual acts and treated her as a disposable object, leaving her vulnerable and unprotected.
Furthermore, Bielby’s conduct while fleeing justice was condemned.
The judge labeled his attempt to abscond as “simple cowardice,” suggesting that Bielby was unable to confront the reality of his actions.
Ultimately, Judge Carr sentenced Bielby to 20 years in prison, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the lasting harm inflicted on his victim.
