STEVEN BEDDOES SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS FOR SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN BASINGSTOKE

A man from Basingstoke has received a severe prison sentence of 20 years after being convicted of multiple sexual offences involving three vulnerable children. Steven Mark Beddoes, aged 46 and residing on St Peter's Road in the South Ham area, was sentenced at Winchester Crown Court on Friday, November 18. His conviction comes after a jury returned a guilty verdict in August following a comprehensive trial, during which Beddoes was found guilty of 23 out of the 24 charges he had denied.

The charges against Beddoes encompass a range of heinous acts, including rape, attempted rape, indecent assault, and acts of indecency committed against children. The court proceedings revealed that over a span of approximately 15 years, from 1999 to 2014, Beddoes had sexually assaulted three children—comprising two girls and one boy—in the vicinity of Basingstoke. These offences, committed over a lengthy period, underscore the predatory nature of Beddoes' actions and have caused significant trauma to the victims.

In his sentencing, Judge Susan Evans emphasized the gravity of the crimes. She ordered Beddoes to serve a minimum of 20 years in prison, with an extended license period of six additional years following his release. Furthermore, Beddoes was mandated to register as a sexual offender for the remainder of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring due to the severity of his offences.

The investigation into Beddoes' offending was a collaborative effort between Hampshire Constabulary's Child Abuse Investigation Team (CAIT) and the Basingstoke Criminal Investigation Department (CID). Detectives involved in the case, Detective Constable Timothy McSpadden of CAIT and Detective Constable Alex Hall of Basingstoke CID, highlighted the importance of victim bravery in bringing the case to justice. They expressed their recognition for the victims’ courage in speaking out and giving evidence in court, which was instrumental in securing the conviction.

Both officers underlined the significance of the victims' trust and cooperation, stating that their testimonies were vital in ensuring Beddoes was held accountable. They also acknowledged that without the bravery of the victims, such criminal proceedings would not be possible. The police and Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) conveyed their appreciation for the victims' bravery and their role in preventing further harm to others.
