NEWCASTLE PREDATOR STEPHEN POWER SENTENCED FOR DECADES OF ABUSE
In a case that has spanned over three decades, Stephen Osceola Power, a man from Newcastle, has been convicted and sentenced for a prolonged history of sexual abuse against a young girl. The disturbing series of events began in 1987, when Power, then a man in his early thirties, targeted a schoolgirl, initiating a pattern of predatory behavior that would last until she reached her twenties.
Throughout this period, Power subjected his victim to repeated sexual assaults, creating a cycle of trauma and fear that prevented her from seeking help or reporting the abuse to authorities at the time.
It was only in 2019, after many years of silence and suffering, that she decided to come forward and disclose her ordeal to the police.
Following her disclosure, Northumbria Police’s Safeguarding department launched a comprehensive investigation into the allegations.
The case quickly gained momentum, leading to the arrest of Stephen Power, who was then 66 years old and residing on Morton Street in Newcastle.
During questioning, Power denied the allegations, maintaining his innocence despite the evidence presented against him.
His case was subsequently brought before Newcastle Crown Court, where a jury found him guilty of multiple counts of rape on Monday, March 28.
The verdict marked a significant moment in the pursuit of justice for his victim, who had endured years of suffering in silence.
The following day, Power was sentenced to 24 years in prison, a punishment reflecting the gravity of his crimes.
In addition to his prison term, Power will be required to sign the sex offenders register for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community.
His conviction and sentencing serve as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the courage of victims who come forward to seek justice, even after many years of silence.
