STEPHEN JONES FROM CUMBRIA SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN WORKINGTON
A man from West Cumbria, who was employed in museum management, has been sentenced to prison after admitting to sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl.The incident has left the young victim suffering from nightmares and a profound loss of innocence, as detailed during the proceedings at Carlisle Crown Court.
Stephen Jones, aged 53, who served as a duty manager at the Helena Thompson Museum in Workington, pleaded guilty to eight charges, most of which involved his sexual contact with the underage girl.
One of the charges also related to his creation of an indecent image of a child.
Prosecutor Steven Swift outlined the case, revealing that the first signs of Jones's misconduct emerged when the girl’s mother discovered inappropriate messages sent by Jones to her daughter on her mobile phone.
These messages raised suspicions, prompting the mother to confront her daughter.
The teenager then confirmed that Jones had sexually abused her on six separate occasions.
She had documented some of these incidents in her personal journal, which provided crucial evidence during the trial.
The girl’s account included instances where Jones sent her an indecent image of himself and requested photographs of her in return.
In her writings, the girl described Jones as “creepy” and expressed her hatred for the sexual contact she was subjected to.
Despite his previous good character, the court was told that Jones’s actions had caused significant harm.
Prosecutor Brendan Burke acknowledged that the defendant’s guilty pleas were the only mitigating factor in the case.
Judge Michael Fanning addressed the court, emphasizing that the offending occurred over a relatively short period but was particularly damaging due to the victim’s vulnerability.
The judge highlighted the devastating impact on the girl, noting that she had retreated into herself and was suffering from nightmares.
He stated, “Her childhood innocence has been stolen and there is no replacing it.” As a result, Jones was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
The court also imposed a 15-year sexual harm prevention order and a restraining order that prohibits him from having any contact with the victim, ensuring her protection moving forward.
