NEWS: UNDERTAKER AVOIDS JAIL AFTER BEING CONVICTED OF HAVING HUNDREDS OF CHILD ABUSE IMAGES AND SEXUALLY ABUSING CORPSES
An undertaker who was found with hundreds of indecent and extreme images, including material showing child abuse, bestiality and sexual interference with corpses, has avoided an immediate prison sentence.Gary Williams, 45, admitted having a sexual interest in girls as young as five during online conversations on Skype and Telegram, which led him to download the images.
Liverpool Crown Court heard that police received intelligence about the sharing of illegal material on a social media platform, and Williams was identified as one of the users involved.
Officers searched his home on September 18 last year and seized several electronic devices.
His iPhone was later found to contain 542 indecent images of children—more than 300 of which were Category A and B, the most serious types.
Investigators also uncovered prohibited CGI images, 352 bestiality images and two images showing sexual interference with a corpse.
Williams had used online chatrooms to request and exchange illegal material.
In one conversation, when another user asked what age he liked, he replied “five plus”.
Under police interview, he admitted using chatrooms but attempted to downplay his actions.
His defence barrister said Williams was “disgusted with himself” and wanted help to address his behaviour.
The court heard he had struggled with loneliness and unresolved trauma, including the loss of both parents in 2007.
Character references described him as compassionate and community-minded, which the judge said stood in stark contrast to the offending.
Williams pleaded guilty to multiple counts relating to the possession and making of indecent images of children and extreme pornography.
He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for 18 months.
The judge told him the offences clearly crossed the custody threshold, but his lack of previous convictions and his willingness to engage with rehabilitation allowed the term to be suspended.
Williams must complete 200 hours of unpaid work, 15 rehabilitation days, a building choices programme, and a three-month curfew from 9pm to 6am.
He will also be on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years and is subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
