BARNSTAPLE MAN STEPHEN HAYES CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN PLYMOUTH
In a case that has shocked the local community of Barnstaple, Stephen Hayes, a 24-year-old resident of Rock Park Terrace, has admitted to possessing a significant collection of illegal images and videos depicting child abuse. The authorities uncovered a total of 343 such illicit files on Hayes's computer, which included a disturbing mix of still images and moving pictures.During the court proceedings, Hayes pleaded guilty to 12 counts of possessing indecent images of children. These images ranged in severity, with one classified as the most serious category five, indicating extreme content. Additionally, he admitted to possessing two movies at this highest level of severity, along with 12 other images categorized at the next worst level. Despite his guilty pleas, Hayes denied an additional charge related to possessing an extreme adult image.
Following his admission, the court ordered Hayes to register as a sex offender, a standard procedure in cases involving child exploitation. The case was subsequently adjourned to allow for the preparation of reports that will inform sentencing. Hayes was granted bail and was assigned a temporary address at Mutley Plain in Plymouth, where he is expected to remain until the next court hearing.
Representing Hayes, Mr. Richard Crabb, emphasized his client’s character and the difficulty he faced in pleading guilty. “He is 24 and of good character and has found it very difficult to plead guilty. It has taken a great deal of courage on his part,” Crabb stated.
Presiding over the case, Recorder Mr. Paul Dunkels, QC, acknowledged the seriousness of the charges. “You have pleaded guilty to serious matters,” he told Hayes. “All sentencing options will be open to the judge who deals with you.” The court’s decision on the appropriate sentence will be determined after the reports are completed and reviewed.
