RICHARD DAY FROM BARNSTAPLE JAILED FOR KIDNAPPING IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE
In September 2018, a harrowing incident unfolded in Northamptonshire involving a man from Barnstaple, Devon, named Richard Day. The case drew significant attention as it highlighted the dangers faced by vulnerable individuals in isolated areas and the relentless pursuit of justice by law enforcement authorities.According to court reports, Richard Day, aged 52 at the time, targeted a 13-year-old girl as she was making her way to visit a friend. The incident took place as she crossed a bridge in Northamptonshire, an area known for its quiet, less-trafficked pathways. Seizing the opportunity when she was alone, Day approached her from behind and quickly covered her mouth with his hand, attempting to silence her.
He then resorted to violence, punching her in the head and striking her face against the metal railings of the bridge in an effort to subdue her. His intent was clear: to kidnap her with the apparent aim of raping her. The court heard that during the attack, Day’s trousers were already undone, indicating a disturbing premeditation and intent.
Despite the assault, the young girl did not succumb easily. She fought back fiercely, managing to break free from Day’s grasp. Her resistance was so determined that it caused him to abandon his assault and flee the scene. Her quick thinking and resilience played a crucial role in her escape, and shortly afterward, she encountered a member of the public. She explained what had happened, providing vital information that led to the police being called.
Law enforcement officers responded swiftly, and Richard Day was arrested shortly after the incident. The case was thoroughly investigated, and in August 2017, a jury found him guilty of attempting to kidnap the girl. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about Day’s criminal history, including a previous conviction for a similar crime. In 1996, he was sentenced to four years in prison for a chillingly similar incident of rape.
During the sentencing hearing, Her Honour Judge Adrienne Lucking described Day as a dangerous individual who posed a persistent threat to society. She expressed her belief that his actions were driven by a clear intent to commit sexual assault, noting that he approached the girl in an isolated area and used violence to carry out his plans.
Judge Lucking emphasized that Day’s propensity for sexual violence had not diminished over the years, stating, “You have a propensity for rape. It may have laid dormant for several years… but I am satisfied that you are a dangerous offender.” As a result, she sentenced him to 16 years in prison. Additionally, he will remain on the sex offenders register for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.
The court also commended the young victim for her extraordinary courage and presence of mind during the ordeal. Her detailed account of the attack was instrumental in leading to Day’s arrest and subsequent conviction, highlighting her resilience in the face of a terrifying experience.
