STEPHEN GARSIDE AND HIS SHOCKING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OPERATIONS IN YORKSHIRE
A notorious sex offender from Rydale in Yorkshire, Stephen George Garside, has been sentenced to prison after a disturbing investigation uncovered an enormous collection of over 330,000 illegal sexual images of children, as well as videos depicting young victims as young as two years old.The prosecutor, Brooke Morrison, detailed the extent of Garside’s disturbing collection, revealing that it included explicit videos and photographs involving children, which Garside had collected over a period of 12 years.
These illegal files were so numerous that, at one point, he went so far as to print some of the images and assemble them into a physical photo album, highlighting the depth of his obsession.
Authorities acted following a serious investigation, culminating in Garside’s arrest at his workplace.
Officers conducted a search of his work locker and his residence near Malton, where they retrieved multiple digital devices and relevant items.
Garside, then 58 years old and residing on Saxon Drive in Rillington near Malton, was subsequently charged and brought to court.
During the legal proceedings, Garside admitted to the charges but insisted to a probation officer that his interests were limited to adult pornography, claiming he never sought or viewed images of children online.
However, deputy circuit judge Deborah Sherwin quickly dismissed this claim, emphasizing that the evidence overwhelmingly indicated Garside’s long-standing interest in child pornography.
The judge stated, “It is clear to me you have held an interest in child pornography for many years.
This was sexually motivated by the need to satisfy your needs, you not having experienced a sexual relationship in your adult life.” Following his guilty plea to multiple counts, Garside was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years and was subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
This order is intended to restrict his access to the internet and allow police to monitor his online activities closely, preventing any future access to illegal material.
The charges against Garside included six counts of making indecent images of children through downloading, one count of distributing a small number of images from the lowest category, one count of possessing extreme pornography, and one count of possessing prohibited images of children.
Garside chose to represent himself during the court proceedings and chose not to offer any mitigating statements when prompted by the judge.
The investigation into Garside’s activities began on July 7, 2020.
On that day, police officers visited his residence and workplace, subsequently conducting a thorough search.
They seized a variety of electronic devices and related items for forensic analysis.
The examination revealed that Garside’s devices contained a staggering total of 333,337 videos and pictures, with nearly all of them—more than 99%—featuring children.
Among the videos, 373 were of children, with 94 classified as the most serious category of sexual videos, 51 of a middle severity, and 219 of the least serious.
There were also seven prohibited videos and one video depicting extreme sexual content involving children.
The photographic material was equally disturbing, with 321 images in the most serious category, 606 in the middle category, and a shocking 332,237 images in the least serious category.
Additional illegal content included 114 sexually extreme images and 59 prohibited pictures of children.
The earliest files date back to 2008, demonstrating a persistent pattern of illegal downloading, which continued until Garside’s arrest 12 years later.
Investigators also discovered that Garside had used torrent software on two occasions to distribute a very small number of the least serious images online, highlighting an attempt to circulate the material despite the general trend of hoarding and downloading for personal gratification.
This case underscores the serious nature of online child exploitation and the efforts of law enforcement to combat such heinous crimes.
Garside’s sentencing reflects the severity of his actions and the ongoing need for vigilance and intervention in protecting vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse in Yorkshire.
