STEPHEN CURRAN'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN LEEDS: PAEDOPHILE SENTENCED TO OVER 14 YEARS FOR ABUSE AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

In July 2019, the community in Leeds was shaken as details emerged of a disturbing case involving Stephen Curran, a 65-year-old man who was convicted of heinous sexual offenses against two young girls.

The case was brought to light in Leeds Crown Court, where both victims courageously faced their abuser during the trial to recount the profound and lasting trauma inflicted upon them.

The first victim, a girl just 11 years old at the time of the abuse, endured multiple assaults at Curran’s residence in Leeds over a span of several years.

She described feeling intense pain and humiliation as a result of his repeated predatory actions.

The second victim, who was 15 when targeted, recounted her fear that she was about to be raped during the incidents.

Both girls revealed that the abuse occurred over a period of approximately three to four years, leaving them with deep emotional scars.

Following his arrest, Curran attempted to dismiss the allegations by accusing both victims of being “compulsive liars” who fabricated the entire story.

Authorities seized electronic devices from his home, which contained a disturbing collection of indecent images of children.

Among these were 40 images classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of child exploitation.

Authorities also discovered extreme images depicting sexual abuse of animals, adding to the gravity of his offenses.

Initially released on bail, Curran’s criminal activities did not cease.

He was later identified and caught by online paedophile hunter groups, who exposed his attempts to contact minors.

Curran sent sexually explicit messages to a profile he believed belonged to a 14-year-old girl named Ruby.

In reality, this profile was created by the paedophile hunter group Keeping Kids Safe.

He was subsequently arrested but chose not to comment on the charges and was granted bail once more.

Undeterred, Curran continued his illicit activities by reaching out to profiles he believed belonged to underage girls named Megan, Chelsea, and Leanne.

He sent graphic sexual messages along with vile images of himself, further demonstrating his predatory behavior.

Curran, who resides on Greenmount Street in Beeston, Leeds, pleaded guilty to multiple serious charges, including four counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, engaging in sexual activity with a child, and sexual activity in the presence of a child.

He also admitted to three counts of making indecent photographs of a child, possessing extreme pornographic images, attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual act, and attempting to engage in sexual activity with a minor.

During a recent court hearing, both victims chose to attend and read victim impact statements.

One, now an adult, expressed her feelings of lost dignity and ongoing fear, stating, “I feel like my dignity is not mine anymore and he has taken it away.

I wake up at night thinking he will come to my house.

I am sick of feeling unsafe.” The other victim described feeling dirty and used, expressing her inability to trust others due to the abuse.

She also shared how her schoolwork was severely affected, with sleepless nights and exhaustion impacting her daily life.

Her words reflected the deep emotional toll the abuse had taken, saying, “I feel like I have been trampled on.” Judge Guy Kearl QC, the Recorder of Leeds, adjourned the hearing to allow for a probation report to assess whether Curran should be classified as a dangerous offender.

Today, he sentenced Curran to 14 years and four months in prison.

The judge warned that Curran’s release would depend on whether he was deemed no longer a threat to children.

Praising the victims for their bravery in speaking out, Judge Kearl emphasized the lasting impact of Curran’s actions, noting his apparent lack of insight into his offending behavior.

Curran was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

In mitigation, Marcus Waite highlighted Curran’s military background, noting his service as a soldier in Northern Ireland and Germany during the 1970s.

Waite also mentioned Curran’s struggles with health issues, including diabetes and lung disease, and his lack of prior convictions.

Despite these factors, the court made it clear that the severity of his crimes warranted a lengthy custodial sentence, reflecting the community’s need for justice and protection from such predatory behavior.
