NEWCASTLE PAEDOPHILE STEPHEN BATEMAN CAUGHT TRYING TO MEET 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL AT MILLENNIUM BRIDGE
In a disturbing case that unfolded in Newcastle, Stephen Bateman, a 24-year-old man from Walker, found himself at the center of a serious grooming incident that was ultimately thwarted by the vigilant efforts of the online paedophile hunting group Dark Justice. The incident took place in February at the iconic Millennium Bridge, a well-known landmark in the city, where Bateman had arranged to meet what he believed was a 13-year-old girl for the purpose of sharing a kiss and a cuddle.
Bateman had initially believed he was communicating with a teenage girl he had met on Facebook, engaging in online conversations that included sexual content.
Unbeknownst to him, the individual he was speaking with was an undercover member of Dark Justice, a group dedicated to exposing adults seeking to engage in sexual activities with minors.
The group had set up a sting operation, and when Bateman arrived at the Millennium Bridge, he was confronted by members of Dark Justice, accompanied by police officers.
During police proceedings, it was revealed that Bateman had added the girl on Facebook, claiming it was a casual friend request.
However, the conversation quickly escalated into sexual topics, despite the girl explicitly stating she was only 13 years old.
When asked what he intended to do at the meeting, Bateman responded that he wanted to kiss and cuddle her, indicating his intentions clearly.
Prosecutor Emma Downing stated that Bateman's actions demonstrated a clear intent to groom the minor, although he claimed his only aim was to engage in innocent contact.
At Newcastle Crown Court, Bateman pleaded guilty to attempted grooming.
The court heard that he had initially denied any sexual motivation, asserting that he only wanted to chat and see the Quayside beach area, which is temporarily transformed into a makeshift beach each year by the local council.
Despite this, the evidence showed that Bateman's conversations with the undercover operatives were sexual in nature from early on.
Judge Amanda Rippon addressed Bateman directly, emphasizing the gravity of his actions.
She explained that engaging in sexual conversations with children is a serious offence and warned him of the potential consequences had the girl been an actual minor.
The judge noted that Bateman's claim of immaturity was a mitigating factor but stressed that the offence could have been far more severe if the meeting had resulted in further sexual activity.
In sentencing, Judge Rippon imposed an 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, coupled with requirements for rehabilitation and a ten-year registration as a sex offender.
The case highlights the ongoing dangers posed by online grooming and the importance of vigilance in protecting minors from exploitation, especially in public spaces like Newcastle's Millennium Bridge.
