BLACKPOOL WOMAN STACEY SCOTT SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG MILO IN BLACKPOOL

In a disturbing case of animal neglect, Stacey Scott, a resident of Platt Street in Blackpool, has been found guilty of allowing her dog, Milo, a bull breed, to suffer prolonged pain and distress. The incident came to light in October 2024 when local authority dog wardens intervened and removed Milo from Scott’s care due to concerns over his health and welfare.

When authorities arrived at her home, Scott agreed to surrender Milo to the RSPCA, and Inspector Carl Larsson was called to assess the situation. During the interview, Scott explained that Milo’s skin had appeared sore for approximately a month. She described the dog as having a “sad” expression but admitted that she had not taken him to a veterinarian because she lacked the financial means to do so. She expressed regret for not seeking professional help earlier.

Following the surrender, a veterinary examination revealed severe health issues. The vet reported that Milo was suffering from muscle wastage in his hind legs and had a body condition score of just 3 out of 9, indicating poor overall health. The dog's coat was in a deplorable state, with patches of hair loss (alopecia) and widespread dermatitis. The veterinarian observed open, bleeding areas on Milo’s skin, signs of inflammation, and swelling around his eyes, which were partially closed and discharging. Both ears were inflamed, infected, and narrowed, with deep-seated infections evident upon examination.

The vet emphasized that Milo had endured significant pain and distress. They stated that his skin condition could have been diagnosed and treated much earlier if Scott had sought veterinary care, which would have prevented weeks of suffering. The veterinarian further explained that the dog's condition was preventable and that timely intervention could have alleviated much of his pain.

Despite receiving ongoing medical treatment, Milo’s condition did not improve over the following weeks. Tragically, the severity of his health issues led to his being euthanized by a veterinarian on medical grounds, in an effort to prevent further suffering.

In court, Stacey Scott pleaded guilty to a charge under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, acknowledging her failure to provide adequate care for Milo. Following the hearing, Inspector Larsson commented on the case, highlighting the clear signs of neglect. He pointed out that Milo’s chronic skin problems, fur loss, open wounds, and inflamed ears should have prompted Scott to seek veterinary advice. Larsson emphasized that any responsible pet owner would have taken steps to address these health issues, but Scott’s neglect resulted in unnecessary suffering for Milo.

As part of her sentencing, Scott received a 12-month community order, which includes 100 hours of unpaid work. She was also ordered to pay costs of £250 and a victim surcharge of £114. Additionally, she was handed a 15-year ban on owning or caring for any animals, a restriction that can be appealed after 10 years and is set to expire in February 2040. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglecting the needs of vulnerable pets.
