SONIA CHIVERS AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN YORKSHIRE

A woman identified as Sonia Chivers, aged 29, endured an emotional breakdown in Hull Crown Court as she faced serious allegations of child sexual abuse.

Dressed in a black trouser suit with restraints, she was visibly distressed and began crying loudly as the prosecution detailed her involvement in heinous acts involving minors.

The courtroom was filled with members of her family, including her mother, who sat among the spectators observing the proceedings.

The charges against her included the creation and distribution of explicit videos and images involving a child, as well as engaging in sexual activity in the child's presence.

According to the court’s findings, Sonia Chivers was involved in recording and sharing videos where she performed sexual acts next to a child.

She also took an indecent image of the same child and subsequently posted this online.

Despite her claims that she did not derive sexual pleasure from the sharing of this content, she confessed to enjoying the attention she received from other users on the messaging platform Kik, where discussions about child abuse were known to take place.

Chivers pleaded guilty to multiple charges: making and distributing one Category B video, creating another Category B video, making and distributing a Category C image, and participating in sexual activity while in the presence of a child.

The details were laid out by prosecuting lawyer Richard Butters, who explained that on January 16, 2020, an undercover police officer was able to infiltrate a Kik group chat where users exchanged disturbing discussions about sexual abuse against children aged between zero and four years old.

During this covert operation, the officer communicated directly with Chivers.

During their online conversation, Chivers sent messages indicating she was feeling “horny” and even mentioned the possibility of calling the child into the room.

She described in detail what she wished the child to do and claimed that the child “knew what to do as routine.” She also expressed plans to record her activities in future encounters.

Chivers was arrested on December 5, 2020, at which point police recovered two explicit videos and an image from her mobile device.

Court evidence revealed one of the videos depicted her engaging in a sexual act with a child, with the background audible to a cartoon on the child's television.

Towards the end of the recording, the child's head became visible in the footage.

The second video included her speaking to the child while performing the act.

The classified Category C image involved the partial exposure of the child's genitalia, with the child's head cropped out of the picture.

When apprehended, Chivers admitted to her involvement in these offences, describing herself as feeling “disgusted” after creating the videos.

Chivers, who has no previous criminal record, was represented by her defence lawyer, Richard Thompson.

He emphasized the difficulty in understanding why someone from a loving family environment might commit such crimes, suggesting that her loneliness and desire for attention may have played a role.

Mr.

Thompson also highlighted that Chivers took responsibility for her actions and expressed remorse.

Following her arrest, Chivers was granted bail and did not re-offend.

Her family and supporters provided her with a support network, which included some individuals present in the courtroom.

She managed to find employment and was attempting to rebuild her life after the incident.

The presiding judge, Sophie McKone, condemned Chivers’ actions as “gross, sickening, and perverted.” The judge stated that she believed Chivers derived sexual gratification from the knowledge that the child was watching, even encouraging the child to observe her activities.

Although Judge McKone acknowledged that Chivers was likely suffering from emotional isolation at the time—a factor that might explain her behavior—it does not serve as an excuse.

As a result, Judge McKone sentenced Sonia Chivers to a term of 40 months in prison.

She also ordered her to be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and to be registered on the Sex Offender Register indefinitely.

As Chivers was led away from the court, her loud weeping was heard echoing in a distant room for several minutes, reflecting the emotional toll of her actions and the court’s condemnation.
