SHUMEL MIH FROM DARLINGTON SEXUALLY ASSAULTS TEENAGER IN THE STREET
In a disturbing incident that took place in Darlington, a young teenage girl was subjected to a shocking sexual assault while she was simply walking home.The attacker, identified as Shumel Miah, approached the girl unexpectedly and committed a series of inappropriate and criminal acts that have left her deeply traumatized.
According to court reports, the incident occurred on July 3 this year along Salters Lane in Darlington.
The teenage girl was on her phone, speaking to her grandmother, when she crossed paths with Miah.
Initially, he walked past her, but then suddenly turned around, ran up to her, and grabbed her bottom.
The assault did not stop there; Miah then proceeded to grab her breast, causing further distress and fear.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Miah, who resides on Thornton Street in Darlington, exhibited a disturbing reaction after the assault.
He was reported to have 'belly-laughed' as he committed the acts, a response that added to the victim’s sense of vulnerability and shock.
The teenage girl provided a victim impact statement in which she described the emotional toll the attack has taken on her.
She expressed feelings of being 'on edge' and explained how the incident has negatively affected her personal and professional life.
She stated, “I didn’t know what he was going to do.
I don’t know whether the sexual assault would continue or he would try to rape me.” Shumel Miah, aged 24, faced charges in connection with the assault.
He pleaded guilty to sexual assault and possession of indecent images of children, with four images classified as Category A – the most severe level – and five images in Category B.
The court heard that Miah’s actions and possession of such images were serious violations.
Judge Timothy Stead sentenced Miah to eight months in prison, but the sentence was suspended for two years.
Additionally, Miah was placed under a two-year community order aimed at addressing his behavior and preventing future offenses.
As part of the court’s ruling, Miah was also subjected to a sexual harm prevention order and was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for the same period, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct and compliance with legal restrictions.
