SHEA HOPPER FROM BOURNEMOUTH JAILED FOR GROOMING UNDERAGE GIRL IN DORSET

In October 2021, a disturbing case unfolded involving Shea Hopper, a 44-year-old man from Bournemouth, who was convicted of grooming a young girl with the intent of engaging in sexual activity.

The incident highlights the dangers posed by online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to protect minors.

Hopper believed he was communicating with a 12-year-old girl named 'Tilly' through various social media platforms and dating apps.

Unbeknownst to him, the profile he was interacting with was actually operated by Dorset Police officers conducting an undercover operation.

This deception was part of a broader strategy to catch individuals attempting to exploit minors online.

During the court proceedings at Salisbury Crown Court on Friday, October 22, Judge Robert Pawson made it clear that there was no doubt in his mind about Hopper’s malicious intentions.

The prosecution, led by Ciaran Smith, explained that police had set up a decoy account for 'Tilly' and engaged in conversations with Hopper on the dating app FastMeet before continuing their communication on Snapchat.

Throughout these exchanges, the 'girl' repeatedly claimed to be in school and only 12 years old, emphasizing her age to Hopper.

According to the prosecution, Hopper sent explicit sexual messages, including a video depicting adults engaged in sexual acts.

One particularly alarming message, sent prior to an arranged meeting, read, “I want us to do this if you want to too,” following the transmission of pornographic material.

The police had arranged to meet Hopper at a designated location, and officers attended with the intention of arresting him upon his arrival.

However, Hopper changed his mind about the meeting, prompting officers to follow his vehicle and track him down.

After his arrest, Hopper expressed remorse to the police, stating, “I have been foolish.

I do not even know why I was chatting to her.

I know I have done wrong.

I should not have even gone on Snapchat.” His admission underscored the gravity of his actions and the recognition of his misconduct.

Hopper, of Evelyn Road in Bournemouth, had previously pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including arranging or facilitating a child sex offence, attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor, possession of amphetamine, and possession of cannabis.

His guilty plea reflected acknowledgment of his involvement in these criminal activities.

During mitigation, lawyer Robert Grey argued that Hopper was under the influence of drugs at the time of messaging 'Tilly.' He suggested that Hopper had initially intended to meet the girl but changed his mind before the meeting took place.

“There is a vital action her and it appears the defendant changed his mind,” said Grey.

“He did not go through with the meeting.

He drove away.” The lawyer further explained that Hopper’s decision to turn his vehicle around and leave the scene indicated a moment of clarity, and that his true intentions could not be conclusively proven from the messages exchanged.

Nevertheless, Judge Pawson dismissed these arguments, emphasizing the clear evidence of grooming behavior.

The judge stated, “Undoubtedly grooming behaviour when one reads the conversation between you and the victim.

Sexual images of your victim were solicited and there was a significant disparity in age.” The judge also noted that Hopper’s decision to drive away from the meeting location could have been for various reasons, but the evidence pointed to a clear attempt to exploit the minor.

Ultimately, Shea Hopper was sentenced to two years and four months in prison.

Additionally, he was issued a sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future conduct and protect the community from potential harm.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat online grooming and safeguard vulnerable minors from predators.
