SHAWN BENNETT AND HIS HORRIFIC CRIMES IN BIRMINGHAM AND REDDITCH
Shawn Bennett, a 29-year-old man residing on Gilbert Road in Smethwick, has been found guilty beyond any doubt by a jury at Worcester Crown Court of committing multiple serious crimes.His conviction includes two counts of rape, one of which involved the assault and rape of a girl under the age of 16.
Additionally, Bennett was convicted of eight separate sexual offences, two counts of assault, theft, and making threats to kill.
The severity of Bennett’s criminal actions extends over a troubling timeframe, with incidents spanning different locations and circumstances.
On the afternoon of Monday, October 22, 2018, Bennett allegedly held a woman at knifepoint inside her residence in Redditch.
He then proceeded to assault and rape her, causing profound trauma.
Later that same day, Bennett targeted a 14-year-old girl near a bus stop in Redditch, following her as she departed.
He then dragged her into nearby bushes, where he assaulted her, raped her, and threatened to kill her, leaving the young girl terrified and victimized.
Following these heinous acts in Redditch, Bennett traveled to the area of Rubery.
There, he engaged in inappropriate and aggressive behavior towards two women, making unwelcome and suggestive remarks.
His conduct escalated as he attempted to physically force both women into nearby undergrowth by trying to drag them along.
His actions drew the attention of police officers, who arrived at the scene and promptly apprehended him, bringing an end to his violent spree.
The legal proceedings resulted in Bennett receiving a substantial prison sentence.
He was sentenced to a total of 30 years in custody, with a minimum of 16 years to be served before he becomes eligible for parole or release.
Furthermore, as part of his punishment and to protect the public, Bennett is required to sign the sex offenders register, ensuring ongoing supervision.
Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Bailey from West Mercia Police emphasized the dangerous nature of Bennett’s crimes, describing him as an “extremely dangerous sex offender.” Bailey stated, “Bennett is an extremely dangerous sex offender who spent the day of Monday, October 22 carrying out these horrific crimes,” underlining the severity of Bennett’s actions and the importance of justice being served to safeguard the community.
