SHAUN O'CONNOR AND HIS SHOCKING SEXUAL AND VIOLENT CRIMES IN DURHAM AND DARLINGTON
Shaun O'Connor, a man known by the nickname "Chop-Off," committed a series of disturbing and predatory acts targeting women in and around Durham and Darlington. His actions included sexual assault, indecent exposure, and violent assault, which have left victims traumatized and authorities determined to pursue justice.
On the morning of September 7 of the previous year, O'Connor was present at the Darlington post office, where he engaged in unacceptable and illegal behavior.
According to court proceedings, he first targeted a female customer, aggressively grabbing her buttocks and then pressing his body against hers in a gyrating motion.
During this assault, he made a sexual remark to her, adding to her distress.
Witnesses and victims described his conduct as predatory and invasive.
When bystanders or staff asked him to leave the premises, O'Connor did not cease his inappropriate behavior.
The situation escalated moments later when O'Connor approached another woman who was also a postal customer.
This time, he exposed himself in a brazen act of indecency.
Not stopping there, he reportedly grabbed her clothing, specifically pulling her top, which contributed to further distress and fear among the women present.
Authorities confirmed that O'Connor’s behavior was not an isolated incident of impulsivity but part of a pattern of predatory conduct.
Following his arrest in connection with these incidents, during a detention at Darlington police station, O'Connor shockingly performed a sex act in front of a police officer from his cell.
This act of defiance and further misconduct underscored his disregard for the law and the safety of others.
The legal proceedings took a particularly bizarre turn when, on Wednesday at Teesside Crown Court, O'Connor decided to represent himself.
Throughout the hearing, he exhibited disruptive behavior by dancing and shouting, disrupting the court’s proceedings.
Despite his conduct, the prosecution provided a detailed account of his past offenses.
Prosecutor Tabitha Buck outlined additional criminal behavior that spanned prior weeks.
She recounted that on August 18, O'Connor entered a Darlington hotel despite being barred from the premises.
When a staff member asked him to leave, he responded violently, grabbing her by the throat and attempting to kiss her.
As he exited, he was also observed slapping the bottom of another woman inside the hotel.
These aggressive acts demonstrated a clear pattern of harassment and violence.
Just days before that, on July 27, O'Connor was involved in a violent altercation outside the Greyhound Pub on Parkgate.
He punched a man who, according to eyewitness reports, had done nothing to provoke him.
The victim was knocked into a stationary car and subsequently dragged back onto the pavement by O'Connor.
The assault rendered the man unconscious and caused a laceration to the back of his head.
During the court hearing, O’Connor bizarrely claimed, “I saved him, I saved him, Your Honour,” attempting to justify his actions.
O'Connor, who resides on Pateley Moor Crescent in Darlington, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including two counts of sexual assault, two counts of exposure, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
In his confession, he revealed that he had been a victim of sexual abuse himself as a teenager, which he suggested might have contributed to his behavior.
He also expressed remorse during the proceedings.
Judge Howard Crowson sentenced Shaun O'Connor to two years in prison, emphasizing the seriousness of his offenses and the need to protect the public.
Additionally, O'Connor was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years.
In response to the sentence, O'Connor briefly replied, “Thank you,” and added, “I appreciate that I have been safe in prison,” indicating a mixture of remorse and acceptance of his consequences.
This case underscores the disturbing nature of O'Connor’s criminal history and highlights ongoing concerns about individuals who commit predatory and violent acts in public spaces.
Authorities and the judicial system continue their efforts to ensure that those who pose a threat to the community are held accountable.
