SHAUN CONGDON CAUGHT IN DONCASTER PAEDOPHILE HUNTING SCAM - SPARED JAIL

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community, Shaun Congdon, a 22-year-old man from Doncaster, found himself at the center of a serious criminal investigation after attempting to meet a young girl he believed to be just 12 years old.

The incident unfolded at the Seaham Asda store, located in County Durham, on July 5 of the previous year, and was part of a sting operation conducted by a vigilant paedophile hunting group.

According to court proceedings, Congdon had been engaging in online conversations with what he thought were four girls aged 12 and 13.

Unbeknownst to him, these accounts were decoys set up by the hunting group to catch individuals attempting to exploit minors.

During these interactions, Congdon sent numerous explicit images and videos of himself, encouraging the girls to reciprocate with similar material.

The messages were overtly sexual, with Congdon explicitly stating that he did not care about the girls' ages, and referencing school and homework, which left no doubt about the decoys' young age.

Durham Crown Court heard that Congdon had made arrangements to meet one of these girls at the Seaham Asda.

The man believed he was about to meet a 12-year-old girl, but instead, he was met by members of the paedophile hunting group who had called the police.

The authorities swiftly responded, and Congdon was arrested at the scene.

Prosecutor Richard Bennett confirmed that Congdon was taken into custody following the confrontation.

During the court hearing, Congdon admitted to three counts of attempting to incite a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, as well as attempting to have sexual communication with a minor.

His actions were described as part of a pattern of predatory behavior, with the court noting his prolific activity in seeking out young girls during June and July 2018.

Judge Jonathon Carroll addressed Congdon directly during sentencing, emphasizing the severity of his actions.

The judge highlighted that the defendant had been actively trying to contact and engage with young girls within the 12 to 13 age range, with clear references to their age, school, and homework, leaving no room for misunderstanding.

The judge also pointed out that Congdon had explicitly stated he did not care about the girls' ages and had engaged in overtly sexual conversations.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Carroll stated, “If I lock you up for nine months you will not have the opportunity whilst you’re in custody to complete the necessary programmes.

The most important thing to do what I can to make children and society safer and impose this course.

I don’t want to, I do it because it’s the only way to make children safer.” He warned Congdon that any failure to comply with the conditions could result in a return to custody.

As part of his sentence, Congdon received a nine-month suspended jail term, meaning he will not serve time immediately but will be under supervision.

Additionally, he is required to complete a 35-day Horizons programme, attend 20 days of rehabilitation activities, and adhere to an electronic curfew from 7 pm to 7 am daily.

Furthermore, Congdon is subject to a sexual harm prevention order, aimed at restricting his future conduct and protecting potential victims.

Congdon’s case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement and community groups to combat online exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from predatory behavior.

His actions, though met with a lenient sentence, serve as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking online and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding children.
