PREDATOR CAUGHT AFTER BRAVE GIRL COVERTLY FILM ONE OF HIS ATTACKS
In a deeply disturbing case, Shaun Broomhead, a resident of Bolton, has been convicted of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of a young and vulnerable girl.The predator's heinous actions came to light after the brave victim managed to secretly record one of his assaults, providing crucial evidence that led to his eventual arrest and conviction.
Broomhead, aged 41 and living in Lostock, pleaded guilty to eight separate offences relating to the same young girl.
These offenses spanned over a period of two years during which he repeatedly exploited her innocence and trust.
The court was told that his victim, a girl under the age of 14, was manipulated and groomed by Broomhead, who used his position to carry out his despicable acts.
The girl was understandably deeply affected by the ordeal, describing how the abuse has profoundly impacted her mental health.
During emotional testimony in court, the girl explained that the trauma had left her feeling 'messed up,' and that she experiences ongoing anger as a result.
She vividly recounted one particularly distressing incident where she was preparing for a school PE lesson, feeling shifts in her body as if she could 'feel' Broomhead’s touch, despite him not actually being present.
She described this experience as 'the worst thing ever,' highlighting the lasting psychological scars left by the abuse.
The girl also expressed how her school performance has suffered since the incident, revealing that she has 'fallen back' in her studies because she finds it difficult to concentrate or get her head down.
She further shared that her trust in boys has been severely damaged, making her feel uncomfortable and wary around them.
These testimonies underscore the long-term emotional toll inflicted by Broomhead’s sinister conduct.
Prosecutor Andrew Mackintosh outlined that when questioned by police, Broomhead initially denied the allegations.
However, everything changed once investigators presented the court with the covert video recording made by the girl footage that clearly captured one of the abusive incidents.
Broomhead's reaction was one of apparent shock and uncertainty, as he responded with, “I don’t know what to say.” The court heard that in November 2022, Broomhead admitted guilt to several charges, including four counts of assault by penetration, two counts of sexual assault, and two charges of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.
His defence lawyer, Martin Pizzey, painted a picture of Broomhead as a formerly respected member of the Bolton community, known for his strong work ethic.
The lawyer emphasised that Broomhead is truly remorseful, stating, “He is ashamed and upset, and regrets what took place… he knows this is his entire responsibility and is going to be punished.” Sentencing was delivered by Recorder Nicholas Clarke KC, who condemned Broomhead for manipulating and grooming his young victim, emphasising her vulnerability as a young and innocent child.
Broomhead was sentenced to serve a minimum of six years and three months behind bars.
The judge also mandated that he serve two-thirds of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
Additionally, upon release, he will spend an extra 12 months on an extended licence period.
Further measures include a lifelong sexual harm prevention order, restricting his contact with minors, as well as a mandatory requirement for him to sign the sex offender register for the rest of his life.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of abuse and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting vulnerable members of the community in Bolton.
