SHANE REDMAN FROM BRIGHTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN SOUTHWICK
In a case that has shocked the Brighton community, Shane Redman, aged 31, has been sentenced to a total of seven years in prison following his conviction for the sexual abuse of a young boy during his teenage years. The offences took place in Southwick, a suburb of Brighton, between 2002 and 2005, when Redman was between 16 and 18 years old.
Redman, who hails from Southwick, was found guilty by a jury after denying all charges.
The court heard that during his teenage years, Redman engaged in grooming and abusing a younger boy, whom he befriended and saw regularly.
The grooming process involved persuading the victim to perform sexual acts, which culminated in an attempted rape on one occasion.
The victim, who was too traumatised to disclose the abuse immediately, only confided in his girlfriend a decade later, which led to the police becoming involved.
At Brighton Crown Court, Judge Charles Kemp addressed the court, describing Redman’s actions as predatory.
He noted that Redman, who had publicly come out as gay at the age of 14, viewed his victim as an “easy target and outlet for his sexual urges.” The judge emphasized that Redman’s manipulation and control over the young boy were evident, and that the victim’s silence at the time was not due to threats but because of the overwhelming trauma he experienced.
The victim’s delayed disclosure only came after years of suffering in silence, which highlighted the profound impact of the abuse.
Redman was charged with one count of attempted rape of a boy and four counts of gross indecency with a boy under 16.
He pleaded not guilty to the attempted rape but was convicted after a trial.
During the sentencing, Judge Kemp remarked on Redman’s lack of prior convictions and his appearance in court, dressed in spectacles, a black suit, and a silver tie.
The judge acknowledged Redman’s immaturity at the time of the offences and described the case as a “tragedy” affecting not only the victim but also Redman and their respective families.
In sentencing, Redman received seven years for attempted rape and three years for each of the gross indecency counts, with all sentences to run concurrently.
Additionally, he will be required to register as a sex offender for life upon his release from prison, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating effects of grooming and sexual abuse, and the importance of justice for victims who suffer in silence for years before finally finding the courage to speak out.
