SHANE PEKE FROM DARLINGTON SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR CHILD CRUELTY AND INDECENT ASSAULT
In a case that has shocked the community of Darlington, Shane Peeke has been handed a lengthy prison sentence of 15 years after being found guilty of heinous crimes involving a vulnerable child. The sentencing took place via videolink at Teesside Crown Court, where the judge detailed the severity of Peeke’s actions and the profound impact on his young victim.
Peeke, a 56-year-old resident of Murrayfield Way in Darlington, was convicted on multiple counts related to child cruelty and indecent assault.
The court heard that he subjected the child to physical abuse, including beating and confinement.
Specifically, Peeke was found guilty of six counts of indecent assault, two counts of indecent assault on another child, and one count of child cruelty.
These charges stemmed from a trial that revealed the extent of his disturbing conduct.
Despite his convictions, Peeke wrote a letter to Judge Howard Crowson, insisting on his innocence.
However, the court was presented with a powerful impact statement from the victim, who described how their life had been irreparably altered by Peeke’s actions.
The victim recounted that the experience was “the worst thing to ever happen” to them, emphasizing that they were a vulnerable child who was unable to speak out against the abuse.
The judge, in delivering the sentence, addressed Peeke directly, stating, “I have read your letter in which you continue to maintain your innocence.
On the contrary, I have heard the effect your behaviour had on [the victim].” The judge detailed the cruelty inflicted upon the child, including being beaten and imprisoned in a box, where the victim believed they were going to die.
The prolonged nature of this cruelty was underscored, highlighting the severity of the physical abuse.
Judge Crowson further emphasized that the sexual offending was the primary harm caused by Peeke, describing it as “serious in itself.” He pointed out that Peeke had deliberately engineered opportunities to commit these acts, doing so at times when he believed he would not be caught.
This calculated behavior demonstrated a clear pattern of predatory conduct.
To protect the community and prevent further harm, the court imposed a lifelong sexual harm prevention order, which prohibits Peeke from having any unsupervised contact with children.
Additionally, a restraining order was issued, barring him from approaching within a certain distance of his victim.
The overall sentence reflects the gravity of his crimes, with Peeke being sentenced to a total of 15 years behind bars for his actions in Darlington.
