TELFORD MAN JAILED FOR CONTROLLING BEHAVIOUR AND VIOLENT ASSAULT
A man named Shane Nethercot was sentenced to two years and nine months in prison after pleading guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour towards his ex-partner.
According to court proceedings, Nethercot exhibited a pattern of abusive control leading up to a violent incident involving lighter fluid.
The victim, who described their initial relationship as 'lovely' after which Nethercot's behaviour changed, reported that he became jealous and controlling, restricting her contact with family and friends, smashing her phone multiple times, monitoring her clothing and preventing her from wearing makeup, and taking her benefits.
The couple moved into a shared house in Woodside, Telford, where Nethercot reportedly refused to allow her to shower alone.
During an argument on January 31, Nethercot threw water over her, and she retaliated with punches, after which he kicked her in the stomach.
The victim feared he would electrocute her with exposed cables.
Following her repeated attempts to end the relationship, Nethercot threatening to kill both of them by pouring lighter fluid over her clothes and himself, while also dousing the bed.
He accepted during police interviews that he poured lighter fluid over himself but denied doing so to his fiancée.
Ultimately, he pled guilty at a pre-trial hearing.
The judge, Peter Barrie, condemned him as a 'violent bully' and sentenced him to immediate imprisonment, along with a restraining order to prevent contact with his former partner.
