MAN RECEIVES SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR BABY ASSAULT

A man from Randlay has been sentenced after admitting to assaulting a nine-week-old baby in Telford.

Jordan Perkins, 23, appeared before Telford Magistrates’ Court on 28 January to face a charge of child neglect and ill-treatment.

The court heard that on 13 June 2024, Perkins, of Dodmoor Grange, caused unnecessary suffering to the baby.

Perkins slapped the infant three times, resulting in bruising and a burst blood vessel in one of the child’s eyes.

Magistrates handed Perkins a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for a period of 12 months.

The court decided to suspend the term as Perkins has no previous convictions and it was felt a custodial sentence would have no rehabilitative effect.

Under the terms of the order, he must complete 250 hours of unpaid work within the next year.

He was also ordered to participate in 15 days of rehabilitation activities as directed by the probation service.

Perkins must pay £85 in costs to the Crown Prosecution Service and a £187 surcharge.

The court noted that his guilty plea was taken into account during sentencing.
