SEAN SMALL SENTENCED IN NEWCASTLE FOR ABUSE CASES: VICTIM SPEAKS OUT
DECEASED.In July 2022, a distressing case involving a predatory paedophile from Newcastle reached a conclusion as Sean Small, an 80-year-old resident of the city, was sentenced to six years in prison for a series of sexual assaults.
The sentencing followed a detailed court process where Small admitted to committing ten sexual offences against two victims over a span of three years, from 2016 to 2018.
Despite the initial starting point of a 14-year sentence, the court reduced the term to six years due to Small’s guilty pleas, his clean criminal record, and medical evidence indicating that incarceration would be particularly challenging for him.
The reduction reflects the court’s consideration of his age and health, which could make prison life more burdensome.
The victims, one a woman and the other a teenage girl, endured a prolonged period of abuse, with one victim revealing that Small had threatened to kill her family if she ever disclosed the assaults.
Speaking out publicly, she described her ordeal as a living nightmare, stating, “He has tortured me.
This is like living in hell.
This is not how my life should have been.” The young woman is now attempting to rebuild her shattered life, but she admits that the trauma has left her deeply scarred.
She recounted how Small would threaten her, often covering her mouth to prevent her from screaming during the assaults, and how he would manipulate her with threats of violence against her family.
She said, “Every time he got a chance, there was something.
And he would have covered my mouth so I wasn’t screaming or anything.
It just came out of the blue.” Her courage in speaking out is driven by a desire to prevent other potential victims from suffering in silence.
She shared her fears about not recognizing the signs of abuse earlier, questioning how she, being present at home constantly, failed to see what was happening.
Her mother expressed her own feelings of guilt, saying, “I’m still blaming myself.
I feel like I’m a failure at everything.
I know I’m not the victim, but I feel as if I’m a bad parent.” Her father also spoke to UTV, describing the betrayal of trust when Small, who was their gardener, committed these heinous acts.
“He breached our trust and destroyed the innocence of my daughter.
And it hurts me and the pain.
There’s no word for it,” he said.
The father questioned how such a thing could happen and expressed anger and frustration, emphasizing that Small showed no remorse and deserved to remain in prison indefinitely.
“He has shown no remorse.
That man should have to rot in jail and never be allowed out,” he declared.
As Small begins his prison sentence, the victims and their families hope that sharing their story will encourage others to come forward and seek justice.
The case highlights the devastating impact of sexual abuse and the importance of vigilance and support for victims in the community of Newcastle.
