SARAH NASSAU SCARBOROUGH CAT ABUSE CASE: FLEA ALLERGY SUFFERING IN THE NORTH

Sarah Louise Nassau, a resident of Sandringham Street in Scarborough, was found guilty in her absence of causing unnecessary suffering to her pet cat, Minnie. The case highlights a tragic neglect that could have been easily prevented with timely veterinary intervention.

On Friday, October 18, 2019, concerns were raised at a veterinary practice in Scarborough when veterinary staff noticed a severely neglected feline in their care. The cat, a female tortoiseshell named Minnie, was visibly underweight, with fur loss, scabs on her back, and exhibited constant licking and grooming behaviors indicative of significant discomfort.

Inspector Claire Little responded to the call and examined Minnie. She was presented with a cat suffering from severe health issues. The veterinarian explained that the cat had been brought in by a member of the public just eight days prior, suffering from fur loss and irritated skin. At that time, the owner, Nassau, had been contacted via her cat’s microchip and had collected Minnie. Despite being advised to seek veterinary treatment, Nassau claimed she was treating Minnie at home with a medicated gel and did not pursue further medical care.

Inspector Little detailed the extent of Minnie's suffering: “Poor Minnie had a severe flea allergy which had caused sores on her skin and significant fur loss. She was also underweight, weighing only 2.9 kilograms, which is about 1 kilogram less than her healthy weight. It was clear from her fur loss and her constant licking that she was in pain and discomfort.”

The court heard that the veterinarian who examined Minnie observed that her waist was pinched in, and her ribs and spine were easily felt, indicating malnutrition. The vet also identified extensive dermatitis across her back and around her neck, with hair loss suggesting she had been extremely itchy and had resorted to pulling out her fur. Multiple small skin infections with yellow lesions were present, and live fleas were found on her during examination. These findings confirmed that Minnie’s suffering was caused by a severe flea allergy.

The veterinarian emphasized that the visible fur loss was obvious and that any reasonable person should have recognized that Minnie needed urgent veterinary attention. The vet further stated that Minnie's suffering could have been alleviated if Nassau had sought help sooner, highlighting the preventable nature of her condition.

During the court proceedings, Nassau argued that her actions were constrained by difficult financial circumstances. She did not oppose a disqualification order, acknowledging her inability to afford pet ownership at the time. It was also noted that she did not attend court before the warrant was issued, citing difficulties related to the COVID-19 pandemic at her home.

Fortunately, Minnie has since been placed in the care of the RSPCA and is recovering well. She will soon be available for rehoming, offering her a chance at a healthier and happier life.

In sentencing, Nassau was ordered to pay fines, costs, and charges totaling £252. Additionally, she received a two-year ban from keeping all animals, which will expire in January 2023. A deprivation order was also issued for Minnie, ensuring her continued safety and well-being. This case underscores the importance of responsible pet ownership and timely veterinary care to prevent unnecessary suffering.
