BARRISTER DISBARRED FOR TREATING GIRLFRIEND AS SLAVE AND MAKING VIOLENT THREATS
A family law barrister who practiced at Northampton Chambers has been disbarred following allegations that he mistreated his girlfriend in a manner akin to slavery and made threats of violence against her.The victim, Bibi Taylor Wilcott, recounted how Roy told her he would "destroy her" and subjected her to degrading treatment, including pouring iced water on her and coercing her to have an abortion.
She was forced to refer to him "as master, as I was nothing but a dog or a slave" and had to prove herself "selfless and treat him as my everything to earn privileges." Roy also made threats to cut her throat if she didn't comply with his demands.
Despite pleading guilty to harassment charges and receiving a suspended jail sentence of 18 months (later extended to two years), Roy was found to be unfit to remain a barrister by a disciplinary panel.
The panel, chaired by John Rylance, emphasized that the case involved a vulnerable victim who was manipulated throughout.
Roy's solicitor claimed he is now genuinely remorseful, highlighting personal hardships such as losing his home and living on benefits.
Roy appeared supportively at the hearing with family members as he was disqualified from practicing law for conduct considered severely damaging to the reputation of the profession.
