SAM ANDREWS' BRUTAL DOG ATTACK IN BARRHEAD AND GLASGOW ROAD SHOCKS COMMUNITY
A man identified as Sam Andrews from Barrhead has been sentenced to six months in jail following a horrifying and brutal assault on his pet dog. The incident, which took place in August 2013 on Glasgow Road in Barrhead, has left the community deeply disturbed and outraged by the cruelty inflicted upon the defenseless animal.According to court reports, Andrews subjected his Staffie cross, named Scooby, to a violent attack that involved multiple forms of abuse. He delivered approximately 30 blows to the dog using a metal chain, a method of assault that highlights the severity of his cruelty. In addition to the physical violence, Andrews also kicked Scooby and stamped on its back, causing significant distress and potential injury to the animal. The assault was particularly heinous because Andrews also held a lit cigarette lighter close to the terrified dog’s ears, an act that not only inflicted pain but also demonstrated a complete disregard for the animal’s suffering.
The attack was captured on CCTV footage, which was played in Paisley Sheriff Court during the sentencing hearing. The footage, viewed by the court and a horrified audience, showed Andrews staring at the floor as the images of his cruelty were displayed. The incident was only halted when a woman, believed to be Andrews’s girlfriend, emerged from a nearby shop, possibly intervening or alerting others to the situation.
During the proceedings, Sheriff David Pender expressed his condemnation of Andrews’s actions, stating, “Words can’t really adequately describe your treatment of this dog. For no reason at all, you treated the dog in this way.” The sheriff also imposed a ban on Andrews keeping animals for ten years, reflecting the court’s stance on animal cruelty. Andrews, who admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to Scooby, was visibly emotional as he was led away from the courtroom, fighting back tears.
The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA) chief inspector Hamish MacKintosh responded to the sentencing with approval, emphasizing the importance of such measures. He stated, “It sends a clear message that crimes of this nature will not be tolerated. This was a sickeningly cruel attack against a defenceless dog. Thankfully, Scooby recovered from his ordeal and we can now find him a loving new home.” The case has sparked widespread condemnation, highlighting the ongoing need for vigilance and strict penalties against animal cruelty in communities like Barrhead and beyond.
