SACHA EDWARDS
Sacha Edwards, aged 27 and residing on Oxford Road in Bolton, spent the night in Cardiff after fleeing with a 14-year-old girl.
He secured a room at a bed and breakfast for himself and the girl, who was from Blackburn and had been grounded by her parents, who disapproved of their relationship.
The court was informed that the two had previously engaged in sexual activity, and Edwards believed her to be 16 years old.
During the sentencing at Preston Crown Court, Judge Edward Slinger emphasized the law’s role in protecting minors, regardless of their personal choices.
Edwards had been remanded by magistrates on charges of abduction and unlawful sexual intercourse.
Prosecutor Neil Standage explained that Edwards was 26 when he first met the girl in September, and they developed a relationship.
The girl’s mother discovered the relationship and tried to intervene, but the girl falsely claimed she had ended it.
Subsequently, the mother found her daughter at Edwards’ home, where she was drinking alcohol.
One morning, the girl, dressed for school, never arrived.
It was then revealed she had packed her belongings and left with Edwards for Cardiff, where they booked into a bed and breakfast for about three days.
Afterward, Edwards informed his mother of his whereabouts, leading to police involvement.
Defense lawyer Simon Newell stated that Edwards and the girl met in a pub before going to a nightclub.
She initially told him she was 18 but later said she was 16, and he believed her age.
The lawyer emphasized that their relationship extended beyond a one-night stand and that there was no evidence of continued sexual activity after Edwards learned of her true age.
He also noted that Edwards was aware her parents disapproved and claimed he tried to halt the relationship, despite feelings that the girl was eager to pursue it.
Edwards expressed regret for giving in to temptation, acknowledging that the girl was experimenting sexually and was not his first partner.
In sentencing, the judge justified immediate custody, recognizing Edwards’ remorse.
He stated there was no evidence of sexual exploitation during their trip to Cardiff and noted Edwards was honest with police when arrested, appearing distressed about his actions.
