RYAN WILLIAMS FROM CORNWALL SENTENCED AFTER ONLINE GROOMING INCIDENT NEAR ST COLUMB MAJOR
In July 2021, a disturbing case involving a man from Cornwall who believed he was engaging with underage girls online culminated in his sentencing at Truro Crown Court. The individual, Ryan Williams, aged 31, was found guilty of attempting to meet a minor following a period of sexual grooming conducted over several months.
Williams had initiated contact with multiple online profiles, including that of a girl he believed to be just 13 years old.
His communications involved sending sexually explicit messages and nude images, actions that clearly indicated his intent to exploit the minor.
The case was brought to light after Williams was caught by a paedophile hunting team known as the UK database, which specializes in setting up decoy profiles to trap predators.
The UK database team had created a fictitious 13-year-old girl’s profile, which Williams believed was real.
Over the course of three months in 2018, he engaged in conversations that involved him asking the girl for sex and discussing personal details about her life, hobbies, and interests.
Although he arranged to meet her in person, he ultimately failed to show up, as the girl was a decoy.
This was a calculated operation by the UK database team to catch individuals attempting to exploit children online.
Law enforcement officials tracked Williams to a residence near St Columb Major, where the team confronted him on his doorstep.
During the confrontation, Williams admitted to the offences.
Following his admission, police were called to the scene, and he was subsequently arrested.
Authorities seized his computer, phone, and car as part of the investigation.
At the court hearing, Williams pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a girl under 16 following sexual grooming.
His most recent address was listed as Somerset, but the offences took place in Cornwall.
The judge, Simon Carr, delivered a stern sentence, which included a two-year prison term suspended for two years, along with two community orders.
Additionally, Williams was ordered to comply with a sexual harm prevention order, register as a sex offender for ten years, and pay costs amounting to £400.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Carr acknowledged Williams’ guilty plea and the seriousness of the offence.
He noted that Williams, who is profoundly deaf, was of previous good character, but emphasized that this did not mitigate the gravity of his actions.
The judge highlighted that Williams’ engagement with the decoy involved a sexualized conversation over three months, with clear grooming behavior and an arrangement to meet that never materialized.
The court also recognized the context of Williams’ deafness, which can lead to social isolation, but stressed that this did not serve as an excuse for his conduct.
The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and online safety teams to combat online child exploitation and protect vulnerable minors from predators.
