RUSSELL KELLAR'S SHOCKING SEX OFFENCES IN MACCLESFIELD AND SOUTHPORT REVEALED

In December 2016, it was reported that Russell Kellar, who had recently relocated to the Birkenhead area, was involved in a series of disturbing criminal activities that spanned several decades and multiple locations, including Macclesfield and Southport.

Back in June 2005, Kellar, a businessman from Southport, was at the center of a high-profile case involving serious sexual offences against young girls. He was sentenced to four years in prison at Chester Crown Court after admitting to a range of heinous acts committed against minors. The court proceedings revealed that Kellar, aged 49 at the time, had been involved in abusing two young girls over a period of years, beginning in the late 1970s and extending into the early 2000s.

Despite his reputation in Southport for his charitable work and community involvement, the court found that Kellar’s character harbored a darker side. He was convicted of nine counts of indecent assault on a female, four counts of gross indecency with a child, and one count of sexual assault on a girl under the age of 13. The judge, Roger Dutton, acknowledged Kellar’s positive attributes but emphasized that the defendant’s underlying tendencies for inappropriate conduct persisted.

During the trial, it was revealed that Kellar, who owned a menswear shop on Chestergate in Macclesfield, had pleaded guilty to abusing two young girls. The first victim was just eight years old when Kellar, then 19, began groping her, continuing the abuse until she was in her early teens. The abuse was said to have started in the late 1970s and involved multiple locations, including Kellar’s caravan in Abersoch. He reportedly threatened the girl with jail if she disclosed the abuse.

The second victim, also eight years old at the time, was abused by Kellar in 2001. The court heard that the abuse took place in various settings, and Kellar used intimidation to silence her. Kellar faced a total of 16 charges, including allegations of gross indecency with one girl under ten, which he initially denied but later admitted to, along with other offences involving both victims. His guilty pleas included nine counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual assault on the girl under 13.

During the proceedings, Kellar was dressed in a pinstripe suit and red tie, with his family present in court. His defense counsel, Sean Brogan, described Kellar as a man who had committed grave wrongs but suggested that the court might consider alternatives to immediate imprisonment, citing the shame and embarrassment Kellar and his family had already endured. Brogan argued that Kellar had been punished enough by public exposure and the breakdown of his reputation.

However, Judge Dutton was unequivocal in his judgment, stating that Kellar had exploited the girls for his own sexual gratification. The judge emphasized that the severity of the offences warranted a custodial sentence. As a consequence of his conviction, Kellar’s menswear shop on Chestergate was scheduled to close within two weeks, and his property in Park Lane, valued at approximately £600,000, was put on the market. The case underscored the tragic contrast between Kellar’s public persona and his criminal actions, leaving a lasting impact on the victims and the community alike.
