ROY HICKMAN CAUGHT IN BIRMINGHAM BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS AFTER ONLINE GROOMING ATTEMPT
In April 2018, Roy Brian Hickman, a resident of Birmingham, found himself at the center of a disturbing online grooming incident that ultimately led to his arrest and court appearance.Hickman was accused of attempting to manipulate and entice what he believed to be underage girls into engaging in sexual activities through digital communication channels.
Hickman appeared before Birmingham Crown Court to face serious allegations, which included attempting to incite a girl to participate in sexual acts and engaging in sexual communication with a minor.
The court was informed that Hickman had contacted two online profiles, each believed by him to belong to young girls aged 13 and 14.
Over a series of messages, he sent sexually explicit content, clearly indicating his intent to pursue a sexual relationship with the girls he was chatting with.
His plans culminated in an arrangement to meet one of the girls, with the hope of having sexual intercourse.
However, Hickman’s expectations were abruptly shattered when he arrived at the designated meeting spot.
Instead of a teenage girl waiting for him, he was greeted by members of the online child protection team known as ‘Keeping Kids Safe’.
These individuals are part of a paedophile hunting initiative that works to catch individuals attempting to exploit minors.
During the confrontation, the team revealed that both girls involved in the online exchanges were actually adults pretending to be minors.
This sting operation was designed to catch predators like Hickman, who believed he was engaging with underage girls.
The court proceedings reflected the seriousness of the case, and Hickman was handed a sentence of 20 months imprisonment.
However, this sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed further offences within that period.
In addition to the suspended sentence, Hickman was ordered to participate in a sexual offenders treatment programme, aimed at addressing his behaviour and preventing future offences.
Furthermore, he was mandated to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, a measure intended to monitor and manage his conduct moving forward.
Separately, in a different case, Roy Hickman was also involved in a legal proceeding where he was cleared of charges related to the sexual assault of a seven-year-old child.
He was found not guilty of two counts of sexual assault involving a child under 13, as well as charges of raping a child and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
It was noted that Hickman had previously admitted to two other sexual offence charges.
The judge overseeing this case decided to adjourn sentencing to allow for further reports to be prepared.
She emphasized that there remained unresolved factual issues, including whether Hickman had attempted to meet the alleged victim.
The court continues to scrutinize the details of the case to ensure a comprehensive understanding before final sentencing.
