In October 2020, Ronald Carmichael, a notorious sex offender from Grimsby, met a tragic end while incarcerated at HMP Hull, succumbing to complications from COVID-19. The incident was detailed in a report by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, which highlighted the circumstances leading to his death and the health risks he faced due to his pre-existing medical conditions.

Ronald Carmichael, aged 84 at the time, was found on the floor of his prison cell gasping for breath. Emergency medical personnel responded promptly, and he was transferred to a hospital where he later died from COVID-19 pneumonia. The report emphasized that despite suffering from multiple chronic health issues—including lung diseases, high blood pressure, an irregular heartbeat, asthma, and diabetes—Carmichael had expressed frustration with the COVID restrictions imposed within the prison environment.

It was noted that Carmichael, who had signed a disclaimer acknowledging the risks of not shielding against the coronavirus, initially followed the advice to self-isolate. However, from May onwards, he changed his stance and decided against shielding, which ultimately led to his contracting the virus in October. His health rapidly deteriorated, and he was hospitalized with severe breathing difficulties. Despite medical intervention, he passed away two weeks later.
