September 2006 ‘Brazen’ builder jailed for rape of 13-year-old A BUILDER who raped a 13-year-old schoolgirl, six years ago, while her unsuspecting mother was chatting in another room of the house has been jailed for eight years and three months by a Dorset judge. Roger Beeston, 42, of Ulwell Road, Swanage, carried out the attack after being employed to carry out renovations on the family’s home. He followed the girl downstairs when she went to make coffee, dragged her into the dining room and raped her while her mother was talking to his companion upstairs. Judge John Beashel sentenced Beeston to eight years imprisonment for the rape, and two years concurrent for indecently assaulting the same girl shortly before the rape. He was also given three months, to run consecutively, for absconding during his trial at Bournemouth Crown Court. The judge told Beeston: “You were found guilty of the rape of a girl who was only 13. You used your superior strength to drag her into an adjoining room. “She told the jury she was a virgin. This offence has had a real, profound, horrible effect on her. It was a brazen and cynical attack because her mother was in the same house. Clearly only a long prison sentence can be justified.” The judge banned Beeston from ever working with children and ordered him to be placed on the sex offenders’ register for the rest of his life. He was also barred from being alone in private with any girl under 16 without adult supervision for the next 10 years, apart from family members. During the sentencing hearing at Dorchester Crown Court, defence counsel Hamish Dunlop told the court Beeston, who has a son of 15 and a 13-year-old daughter, had made a full contribution to society and been a good father and husband. He had separated from his wife after almost 20 years of marriage following his arrest in February last year, although she was in court throughout the trial. After Beeston’s conviction, his victim told the Daily Echo how her teenage years had been blighted by his abuse. “It has affected me for the last eight years and I can now finally try and get on with the rest of my life,” she said. “Forming relationships with other men has been very difficult and reliving what he did to me in court was a horrendous experience.”
