RODNEY THORNTON'S HORRIFIC SEX OFFENCES IN LEEDS: PENSIONER SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Leeds, a 73-year-old man named Rodney Thornton has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 14 years and four months after being found guilty of multiple historic sexual offences.The court heard that Thornton’s abuse of his young victim began when she was only seven years old, during visits to his residence, and continued over a period of years, causing lifelong trauma.
Judge Geoffrey Marson QC delivered the sentence after acknowledging the severity and the heinous nature of Thornton’s crimes.
The judge stated that Thornton had committed these offences for his own perverted sexual gratification, highlighting the deeply disturbing motives behind his actions.
The judge also expressed profound regret for the lasting damage inflicted upon the victim, emphasizing that her life has been profoundly affected by the abuse.
“It is perfectly apparent you have ruined your victim’s life,” Judge Marson told Thornton during the sentencing.
“She has carried this burden for all these years and will continue to do so throughout her lifetime.
Your actions did not cease of your own volition; they only stopped because she ceased to visit you.” Rodney Thornton, who resides on Lea Farm Road in Leeds, admitted to 14 counts of indecent assault and two counts of attempted rape.
The court was told that the offences occurred during visits when the young girl would come to Thornton’s home.
Prosecutor Joseph Spencer explained that Thornton was often away working in Saudi Arabia but would return home for periods of two to three weeks, during which the abuse took place.
According to the court, the girl recalled that the abuse initially started as a game of “I-spy,” which gradually escalated to cuddles and eventually to more invasive acts.

Spencer detailed that Thornton would put his hand up her clothes and begin groping her, despite her protests and pleas for him to stop.
The victim told the court that she repeatedly told Thornton she did not want what he was doing, but he continued to manipulate her, claiming he loved her.
The girl eventually stopped visiting Thornton when she was 11 years old, but the trauma persisted.
The court also heard that the victim suffers from nightmares and flashbacks, which are a direct result of the abuse.
However, she expressed a sense of empowerment after reporting the crimes to the police, feeling as though she was finally fighting back against her abuser.
Tim Jacobs, representing Thornton, argued that his client’s guilty pleas had spared the victim the ordeal of giving evidence in court.
Despite the heinous nature of the crimes, Thornton’s admission of guilt was seen as a mitigating factor in the sentencing.
The case has left a lasting impact on the Leeds community, raising awareness about the importance of protecting vulnerable children from such predatory behaviour.
