ROBERT WELLS BRIGHTON CHILD SEX ABUSE HORROR REVEALED
In a chilling case that has shocked the community, Robert Wells, a former police surgeon with ties to Brighton, has been convicted of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of children. The lengthy legal proceedings uncovered a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior that spanned decades, culminating in a life sentence for Wells.
Wells, 69 years old, was found guilty of multiple charges including indecency with a child, attempting to produce an indecent image of a child, and other serious offenses.
The court heard how Wells had meticulously constructed a makeshift film studio within a converted scrapyard office, where he filmed drugged children in sexually exploitative acts.
The victim, an eight-year-old boy, recounted how Wells lured him with promises of stardom, telling him he was “going to be a star” before leading him into the sinister setup in October 1998.
The boy described the room as windowless and stark, containing only a hospital-style bed, bright lights, and a large camera.
Wells, who worked as a police doctor for Hampshire Police, directed the scenes while another man operated the camera.
The boy was drugged with a white pill before being taken to the location, which he described as a dark, low-ceilinged room with no windows.
He was told he would become an actor, and Wells repeatedly reassured him, saying, “Come on, you can do it, you’re going to be a star.” During the trial, the court was shown evidence of Wells’s long history of abuse.
It was revealed that he had previously worked as a general practitioner in Caerleon, South Wales, for ten years before relocating to Brighton in the early 1990s.
As a GP, Wells had indecently assaulted three of his patients.
His criminal record also includes a 2004 conviction for filming himself sexually abusing two young girls after drugging them at his Southampton flat, which resulted in a 15-year prison sentence.
After his release in 2015, Wells was re-arrested for breaching the conditions of his license, leading to another seven-year sentence following a trial in Cardiff.
The recent case was further complicated by a cold case review that uncovered new videos of abuse stored on Wells’s computers.
These videos included footage of him raping and filming girls and their sisters he befriended in Brighton.
Despite his incarceration, Wells refused to cooperate with police interviews, choosing instead to communicate via post.
His refusal to appear in court in person was noted, and he listened with his eyes closed during the proceedings.
Judge Rennie delivered a stern verdict, condemning Wells as a monster who had groomed and abused children for years with a disturbing lack of remorse.
The judge emphasized that Wells posed an ongoing threat to the public and described him as the “creator of nightmares.” He stated, “Your perverted sexual appetite knows no bounds.
It is who you are and what you do.
Sorry is something you definitely are not.” Wells was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years, meaning he will be eligible for parole at the age of 86.
The judge also issued three additional concurrent sentences totaling nearly ten years.
The court made it clear that Wells’s actions had caused irreparable harm, and his history of abuse underscored the danger he continued to pose.
The case has left a lasting scar on the Brighton community and highlights the importance of vigilance and justice in protecting vulnerable children from predators like Wells.
