SON'S HORROR AFTER DAD POINTED A GUN AT HIM AND MADE TERRIFYING THREATS
A father under the influence of alcohol seized an air weapon and aimed it at his son, causing the boy to fear being shot.During the court hearing at Nottingham Crown Court, it was revealed that Robert Steptoe looked directly at his victim before retreating downstairs and threatening to shoot any police officers who might arrive at the residence in Hucknall.
The defendant, who admitted to being an alcoholic, previously frightened his wife when she took away a bottle of rum, pushing past her and saying, “getting aggressive are we?” before stating he would retrieve his gun.
The family, overwhelmed with fear, locked themselves in a bedroom.
Judge Steven Coupland sentenced Steptoe to 15 months in prison, commenting: “You have struggled with alcohol for years, and your partner and you had found ways to cope.
However, losing your job earlier this year led to increased drinking, which caused your partner anxiety about your conduct.
“When police arrived, instead of sleeping it off upstairs, you threatened to use a gun and actually retrieved it.
When your son tried to intervene, you pointed the air pistol at him, frightening him that it might fire.
Your family members, including your partner and children, barricaded themselves out of fear of your actions.
Upon police arrival, you handed over the gun; had you not, officers might have shot you, as they couldn't confirm whether it was real.
“Statements from your son and partner highlight how unhappy their lives had become and how much improved they feel now that you are no longer present.
It is truly tragic.”
