ROBERT POWELL CAUGHT IN LIVERPOOL PAEDOPHILE STING AT EXETER ST DAVID'S RAILWAY STATION

In a significant case highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat online child exploitation, Robert Powell, a 57-year-old man from Liverpool, found himself at the center of a police sting operation that took place in Exeter. The incident unfolded in February when Powell traveled from his home city to Exeter St David's railway station, with the apparent intention of meeting a 13-year-old girl named Suzie. Unbeknownst to him, law enforcement officers from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) centre had been monitoring his online activities.

Powell had engaged in conversations with what he believed was a teenage girl, but in reality, he was communicating with undercover officers posing as Suzie. The operation was part of a broader effort to identify and apprehend individuals attempting to exploit minors through digital platforms. During the course of their interactions, Powell was involved in sexually explicit exchanges, including indecent acts performed in front of a webcam. The police had arranged for him to visit Exeter, where he asked the fictitious girl whether she preferred to go shopping or engage in sexual activity first.

Following his arrest, Powell was taken into custody and subsequently charged with multiple serious offences. He admitted to five counts, including attempting to meet a girl for sexual grooming purposes between January 18 and February 18 of the same year. He also pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual activity in the presence of a child under 16 and inciting a 13-year-old girl to participate in sexual acts.

During the hearing at Exeter Crown Court, Judge Graham Cottle acknowledged Powell’s full admission of guilt and his willingness to seek help. The judge emphasized that treatment would be more beneficial than additional incarceration, stating that it would be “much more constructive” for Powell to undergo a rehabilitation program. Powell had been remanded in custody for nearly five months before being released yesterday. As part of his sentence, he is required to attend a three-year supervised treatment program in Northumbria and will be placed on the sex offender register for five years.

Judge Cottle highlighted that Powell’s recognition of his issues and his motivation to change were positive signs, and he expressed hope that the rehabilitation would aid in preventing future offending. The case underscores the importance of proactive law enforcement measures in tackling online child exploitation and protecting vulnerable minors from predators operating under the guise of digital anonymity.
