ROBERT NEILL SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS IN WREXHAM FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON VULNERABLE ELDERLY WOMAN
Relatives of a disabled elderly woman in Wrexham were left 'deeply distressed' after a male district nurse, Robert Neill, was filmed sexually assaulting her in her own home. The incident, which took place in 2022, was captured entirely on a CCTV camera installed by the victim’s family due to concerns for her safety.
Robert Neill, 62, of Wrexham, North Wales, pleaded guilty to sexual activity and inciting sexual activity with a woman suffering from a mental disorder.
He was sentenced to 14 years in prison, and an additional four years extended on licence, when he appeared at Mold Crown Court on Friday, according to North Wales Police.
The offences came to light after a family member reviewed the footage and saw Neill assaulting the woman.
Authorities were promptly notified, leading to his arrest the following day, and he was formally charged in July.
Detective Constable Jane Burns, who led the investigation, commented: 'This is a truly shocking case against a vulnerable and disabled victim who was violated by Neill in her own home.
He abused his position of trust and has caused deep distress to the victim and her family, whom I commend for their bravery and dignity throughout this investigation.
I hope today's sentence provides them some closure, knowing he is being held accountable for this disgraceful crime.' Carol Shillabeer, Chief Executive of Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, addressed the incident, saying: 'These offences are truly appalling, and an abuse of trust by the healthcare professional.
I am so sorry for the significant distress the patient and her family have experienced as a result of his actions.' She added: 'As soon as we were made aware of the staff member's arrest, he was immediately suspended and referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
We have supported the police investigation and reviewed our procedures, implementing changes to prevent a recurrence.
We will continue to work closely with the patient and her family to provide ongoing support and explore any further measures to enhance safety.'
