BLACKPOOL MAN ROBERT KIRK SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN SCOTLAND AND LANCS
In a harrowing case that spanned multiple locations, Robert Kirk, a 48-year-old man from Blackpool, Lancashire, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after being convicted of multiple charges related to the sexual abuse of a young boy and girl.The crimes took place both in Blackpool and at an address in Scotland, revealing a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior that lasted over several years.
According to the court proceedings, Kirk engaged in a series of heinous acts against the children, who were at the time between the ages of eight and eleven.
The young boy was subjected to two counts of rape when he was aged 10 and 11, along with additional charges of sexual assault and incitement to engage in a sexual act with a minor.
The young girl was also victimized on three separate occasions, during which Kirk raped her and engaged in sexual activity in her presence.
He was further convicted of sexually assaulting her and causing her to participate in sexual acts, all while she was between the ages of eight and ten.
The court heard that Kirk's abuse extended beyond Blackpool, with incidents also occurring at a residence in Scotland.
Prosecutor Frances McEntee highlighted the profound impact of Kirk’s actions, noting that the boy had expressed struggles with his sexuality and concerns about his relationship with his own child.
She also mentioned the emotional toll on the girl, who suffered from anxiety, rarely left her home, and was described as being 'a little scared of the world.' During the trial, Kirk’s defense attorney, Chris Hudson, argued that his client was a different man now, attributing his past behavior to an unfortunate upbringing.
Hudson acknowledged that Kirk would find the prison sentence difficult but insisted that it was a consequence of his own actions.
The judge, Judge Andrew Woolman, responded by emphasizing the severity of the crimes and the long-lasting damage inflicted on the victims.
Judge Woolman read aloud personal statements from the victims and pointed out that Kirk, at the time of the offenses, was an alcoholic who had developed a relationship with the young boy, who looked up to him as a role model.
The judge explained that the boy was too young to understand the wrongfulness of Kirk’s actions at the time, which led to further sexualized behavior at school and subsequent abuse.
The abuse of the girl only ceased when she was 11, after she had received sex education at school and physically resisted further attempts by Kirk.
The judge condemned Kirk for taking steps to prevent the victims from reporting the abuse, including claiming that the girl’s mother would not believe her.
As a result of his conviction, Kirk was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
When he was led down to the cells, he shook his head and requested the return of his mobile phone, showing a lack of remorse.
The court’s verdict underscores the gravity of Kirk’s crimes and the devastating impact on his young victims, leaving a lasting scar that will likely affect them for years to come.
