ROBERT HARROD BOURNEMOUTH CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENDER SENTENCED
In February 2021, a man from Bournemouth named Robert John Harrod was brought before Bournemouth Crown Court to face serious charges related to the possession of indecent images of children.The court heard that Harrod, aged 58 and residing on Keeble Road in Bournemouth, had been involved in the illegal downloading and storing of such material over a span of more than a decade.
His actions drew significant attention from law enforcement authorities, leading to a detailed investigation and subsequent sentencing.
The case was initiated when police received intelligence indicating that Harrod’s IP address had been used to access and download numerous indecent images.
Acting on this information, officers executed a raid at his residence in December 2018.
During the search, they confiscated a Dell computer tower, a hard drive from a previous computer, and three DVDs, all of which were later examined for evidence.
Prosecutor David Jenkins outlined the findings to the court, revealing that Harrod had admitted to possessing the images during police interviews.
Notably, Harrod declined legal representation, opting instead to confess directly, stating, “no thanks,” when offered a solicitor, and declaring, “I’m guilty, I just want to talk.” Harrod claimed that his initial exposure to the images was accidental, attributing it to the downloading of movies.
However, the court was informed that his collection of indecent images persisted even after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007.
Harrod reportedly expressed that he intended to report her if he ever saw her in the images, suggesting a misguided sense of intent rather than sexual gratification.
He insisted that his actions were driven by curiosity rather than sexual desire.
The police investigation uncovered a staggering total of 6,487 indecent images, including photographs and videos of children.
These were categorized into different levels of severity: 395 images classified as Category A, indicating the most serious content; 519 as Category B; and 5,572 as Category C.
Additionally, one image was identified as a prohibited image, which is illegal to possess under current laws.
Further analysis revealed that Harrod would view these images on his computer before deleting them, with files dating back to May 2006.
The court noted that while Harrod was charged with seven counts of making indecent images, the case primarily concerned possession rather than production or distribution.
As part of his sentence, Harrod was issued a sexual harm prevention order and registered on the sex offenders register until further notice.
The judge emphasized the gravity of Harrod’s actions, stating that although he was at one end of the spectrum compared to those who abuse children directly, he still shared a significant moral and legal culpability.
The court acknowledged that the images involved the sexual abuse of children, and the judge remarked, “Although you are at one end of the scale and the people taking the images and the people abusing the children are at the other end of the scale, still you are on the same scale.”
