HARROGATE FARRIER ROBERT HARLAND ATTACKS POLICE HORSE GEORGE WITH HAMMER IN WAKEFIELD
In a disturbing incident that took place on December 12, 2020, Robert Graham Harland, a professional farrier from Harrogate, was involved in an unprovoked assault on a police horse named George. Harland, born in January 1967 and residing at Spring House Farm on Skipton Road in Harrogate, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to the West Yorkshire Police horse during an incident at force premises located in Carr Gate, Wakefield.According to reports, Harland attacked PH George with a hammer, an act that drew significant concern from law enforcement and animal welfare advocates alike. The attack was particularly shocking given Harland’s background as a trained farrier, a profession that typically involves working closely with horses and other animals. The incident was initially denied by Harland, who claimed he was not responsible for any harm caused to the police horse. However, as the case progressed, he changed his plea to guilty during his court appearance.
Despite the severity of the assault, PH George was able to recover from his injuries and remains actively engaged in police duties within the West Yorkshire Police force. The court, in its sentencing, imposed a fine of £3,000 along with costs amounting to £275, reflecting the seriousness of the offense and the need for accountability in cases involving animal cruelty and violence against law enforcement animals.
This case has garnered attention from local media outlets, including the Pontefract and Castleford Express, highlighting the importance of safeguarding police animals and ensuring that individuals who commit such acts are held responsible under the law.
