FORMER SOLDIER ROBERT GOMERSALL SPARED JAIL AFTER GROPING 12-YEAR-OLD IN KIDDERMINSTER

In February 2008, a disturbing incident involving Robert Gomersall, a former soldier with a history of military service in the Falklands and Northern Ireland, came to light in Kidderminster. Gomersall, aged 50 and residing on Comberton Road, was involved in an unsettling encounter with a young girl that resulted in serious legal consequences.

On a late night, after consuming a significant amount of alcohol—up to 16 pints of beer—Gomersall arrived at the home of a 12-year-old girl. Despite being offered a place to sleep on a sofa, his visit took a troubling turn when he committed an inappropriate act. According to the prosecution, led by Tariq Shakoor at Worcester Crown Court, Gomersall groped the girl’s breasts when she and a friend came downstairs, an act that was both shocking and unacceptable.

The victim, distressed by the incident, confided in her parents, which subsequently led to the disclosure of additional sexual offences committed by Gomersall. These revelations prompted a thorough investigation into his conduct. Gomersall, who admitted to three counts of sexual activity with a child, faced serious charges in court.

During the hearing, Judge Andrew Geddes described Gomersall’s behaviour as involving “wholly unsuitable remarks” directed at the young girl. Despite the gravity of the accusations, the judge noted that the offences were at the lower end of the scale and highlighted that Gomersall had no previous convictions relevant to such conduct.

As part of his sentencing, Gomersall was given a three-year community order. He was also mandated to participate in a sex offenders’ group work programme, a measure aimed at rehabilitation and preventing future offences. Additionally, he was prohibited from working with children for a period of five years and was ordered to register as a sex offender, a legal requirement designed to monitor and manage risk.

Judge Geddes issued a stern warning that any future similar behaviour would likely result in a custodial sentence, emphasizing the seriousness with which such offences are regarded. Gomersall, who is employed by a litter collection agency, was also ordered to pay £500 in court costs.

During police interviews, Gomersall admitted that he touched the girl over her clothing. He explained to authorities that his actions were influenced by feelings of loneliness and depression, and that he was seeking companionship at the time of the incident. The case underscores the importance of safeguarding children and the ongoing efforts of the justice system to address and penalize sexual misconduct involving minors.
