ROBERT CONNOLLY'S SHOCKING CHILD SEX ABUSE IN BLACKPOOL REVEALED
In a case that has left the community of Blackpool deeply shaken, Robert Connolly, a pensioner from Threlfall Road, South Shore, was convicted of heinous sexual offenses committed against a young girl over a decade ago.The incident, which took place more than ten years prior to his sentencing, involved disturbing acts of indecency that have had a lasting impact on the victim's life.
Preston Crown Court heard harrowing details of Connolly’s misconduct, which included touching the girl, kissing her on the neck, and exposing himself.
The young victim, only eight years old at the time, was unaware of the full extent of Connolly’s actions, as he had warned her that revealing the abuse would lead to “a lot of trouble” for both of them.
This threat was used to silence her, adding a layer of psychological trauma to the physical abuse.
Prosecutor Francis McEntee explained that as the girl grew older, the effects of the abuse began to manifest more prominently in her life.
A victim personal statement revealed that the memories and the trauma associated with the abuse had been weighing heavily on her mind, illustrating the long-term emotional damage inflicted by Connolly’s actions.
It was also disclosed during the court proceedings that this was not Connolly’s first conviction related to child sexual offenses.
He had previously been imprisoned for three and a half years in 1993 for similar offenses, and he also has convictions related to child pornography.
These prior convictions underscore a troubling pattern of predatory behavior.
Rachel Woods, representing Connolly, argued that her client was now a “very different man” than he was ten years ago, citing improvements in his physical health and a reduced risk of reoffending.
She suggested that a sentence involving treatment and rehabilitation might serve the public better in the long run, rather than immediate imprisonment.
However, Judge Jonathan Gibson emphasized the severity of the crimes and the importance of protecting the community.
He stated that the long-lasting damage caused by sexual abuse, regardless of the victim’s age, necessitated a custodial sentence.
Consequently, Connolly was sentenced to 16 months in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child.
In addition to his prison term, Connolly will be subject to a sexual offences prevention order and is permanently banned from working with children.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child sexual abuse and the importance of justice for victims in Blackpool and beyond.
