BRADFORD SEX OFFENDER ROBERT BUCKINGHAM SENTENCED FOR GROOMING FAMILY AND POSSESSING CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
In August 2020, Robert Buckingham, a convicted sex offender with a troubling history, was sentenced to 40 months in prison after being found guilty of befriending an unsuspecting family in Bradford with the apparent intent of grooming their young children.The case revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior that spanned several years and involved the possession of numerous indecent images of children.
Police investigations that began in early 2019 uncovered Buckingham’s extensive collection of illicit material.
When authorities searched his devices, they discovered dozens of indecent images, including a particularly disturbing 4.5-minute video depicting two boys aged between 10 and 12 engaged in sexual activity.
The images and videos were classified into various categories, with some representing the most severe level of child exploitation.
Among the seized items were 85 images of the highest category, showing explicit sexual acts involving pre-pubescent boys.
Additionally, over a hundred images fell into lower categories, indicating a significant amount of material that depicted children in compromising situations.
Further examination of Buckingham’s electronic devices revealed that his tablet contained the majority of these illicit images, while his mobile phone was used to search for indecent content.
Police also found used children’s clothing at his residence, adding to the evidence of his inappropriate interests and behavior.
At Bradford Crown Court, it was revealed that Buckingham’s online activity included searches for indecent images, which he later downloaded onto his tablet.
Despite being under investigation for possessing such material, Buckingham continued his inappropriate behavior.
Later in 2019, while still subject to police scrutiny, he managed to establish a relationship with a family in Bradford that had several young children.
Buckingham initially befriended the mother, offering to deliver a gaming console for her children, and presented himself as a generous benefactor by giving the family expensive household items.
However, his intentions soon became apparent.
Court proceedings heard that Buckingham asked the family’s young daughter to massage his shoulders when he was in pain, and the son also ended up giving him a massage.
The mother of the children later expressed her feelings of disgust and manipulation upon learning of Buckingham’s criminal background and his true intentions.
Concerns about Buckingham’s behavior were also raised by a relative, who noticed inappropriate videos on his Facebook page, prompting further police investigation.
The evidence confirmed that Buckingham had breached his previous court orders, including a sexual offences prevention order, and failed to comply with the notification requirements of his sex offender registration.
Judge Jonathan Rose delivered the sentence, acknowledging that Buckingham’s troubled childhood may have influenced his actions.
Nonetheless, he emphasized that Buckingham had already served a lengthy prison sentence for offenses against children and that his continued behavior demonstrated a lack of remorse or learning from past mistakes.
The judge made it clear that Buckingham’s sexual interests in children, both boys and girls, were wholly unlawful and that viewing indecent images causes ongoing harm to the victims involved.
Judge Rose described Buckingham’s grooming of the Bradford family as a calculated effort to gain their trust and affection, with the ultimate goal of engaging in sexual activity with the children.
He stated, “You wanted to be with these children and you wanted to be with them for sexual purposes.” The court’s findings painted a disturbing picture of a man who used gifts, toys, and money to manipulate and exploit vulnerable families, all while hiding his true intentions behind a facade of kindness and generosity.
